At the point the injector fires, which you can hear, is that the correct TDC for setting the tappet clearances on that cylinder ?

Yes, fuel is injected just before TDC, and for some degrees past it, so this is a suitable point to set valves.  Another way without having to inject fuel is to rotate until the exhaust valve just closes and the intake begins to open, (the "rocking" point) and then continue forward one full turn from that point. You will arrive at the same position.

I find it strange iv'e never heard of  this obvious  method. flywheel timing marks are sometimes covered with gunge, and complicated multi cylinder methods just get my pea brain all confused.

This method is plenty close enough for setting valve clearance, but if you get into spill timing of pumps etc, you will need to align timing marks with some care and attention and follow the manual carefully to get the best result from your motor,   Combustor.

+1, Setting up a good solid TDC timing mark is not all that difficult, and way usefull when you need it to set timing or even to adjust the valves...  IMO it is way better to establish the mark when you are not in a hurry and are relaxed, then when it is dark, with a flashlight and the wife is asking every 5 minutes why the lights are not on or the heater is not running when you have spent all this time and money building this non-backup generator:)
