I fitted a Lister crank since this engine was missing the original one.

That must have meant some fairly drastic modifications  ;D

In your lingo he said "starting handle"  ;D

And finally...

Run times were short since there is no cooling.  I can now start it by hand.

Got stain on the oak frame

First compression stroke!

I hooked everything up and idled the tractor.  With the compression release open I gently engaged the clutch.  It spun up and the compression release lever flipped closed on its own.  Away it went!  I disengaged the tractor drive slipped off the PTO shaft.  Then let it go.   Starts much easier now.  Have not needed the tractor at all.

Sounds a bit like a time I was out in the Alaska bush and a little Briggs & Stratton pump we were running seized up tight from overheating. I figured the thing was toast, but another old-timer looked at it and grabbed a big pipe wrench - forced it to turn over a bit and got it to re-start and finished our job. I was amazed that it would run again at all.

Necessity is a mother!

Bravo! Bob!

The details always chew up the most time.  A neighbor and good friend has a beautiful cabinet shop at his house.  We built the wooden tool box there as well as planed all the wood for the frame.  Thank you Jim!.

I have built the framework for the cooling tanks.  It is mounted waiting on a fuel tank.  I have not found the one I want yet so it is continue the search or build one.

Little by little.

I ended up building the fuel tank.  Heavy, but just the right size.  All the tanks are done and painted as of today.  Framework is off to powdercoat.  Some fittings arrived today from McMaster Carr and final assembly should be this weekend.

Gorgeous, Bob. The oak toolbox adds something special. There are some world-class classic engine restoration experts here, and you're clearly one of them!  Thanks for sharing this project with us neophytes.  It was fun and very educational.

Best Wishes,
BruceM

Things are looking good there Bob. Funny I should see you made a tank, I am going to make one for the 4HR. Will use a steel tube or pipe and cnc flamecut the end caps/legs to weld on along with the appropriate fittings. Keep up the great work.

Paul, I found a short piece of 4 x 8 rectangular tubing at a local weld shop.  I welded on end caps,  drilled holes for vent, fill, and exit, and attached brackets.

More pictures to follow.

That is simply a gorgeous job. The elegant simplicity of the cart goes perfectly with the design of the engine. You don't need to be stopped, but encouraged! But I've got a highly technical question. What did you use for the red slug floating in the cooling water level? We use those types of gauges a lot on our fire engines and with no float on a dirty tube it can be difficult to tell what the water level is.

Thank you Tom.  The red indicator is not a float, but simply a wrap of red electrical tape around the tube.  I want to be sure that the water level is above that line so it will circulate.

If this isn't a chick magnet I've never seen one.  Really nice work with just enough bling.
