Tricks pulling Cylinders?
« on: June 06, 2006, 06:33:27 PM »
In chasing some of the noises in my 16-2 I pulled the pistons.  The #1 rod bearing has wear and there is quite a bit of play in the upper piston grooves.

I'm pulling the cylinders to hone for new pistons and rings.  The heads are off and I have been able to get only one of the 4 spacers loose around the main studs in between the head and cylinder..  Soaking in WD-40 for a week now and tapping to try to install some vibration.  I bolted a chain to the cylinder and hoisted with an engine hoist, tapping to break free but no luck so far.

There is some rust around the cylinder studs in this area.

Suggestions?

Well......I'd probably use Kroil instead of WD40.  I think it works a heack of alot better....IMO.

Bob,
The British parts diagrams show "grub" (set) screws into the four small tapped holes at the top of each cylinder housing, (the holes for the tank brackets, etc.). No one here has ever mentioned them in "roids", (my P/S didn't have them), but it might be worth a check. They must have been meant to "hold" the cylinder in place for routine maintenance like "de- coke". If nothing else, you might be able to get a little more "Kroil" in there if they are drilled thru.

Thanks Guys.  I'll look for those screws in my book and on the engine.  Will be glad to shoot pictures of what I find, although there is not much exciting to see at this stage!
