That type of engine won't have an oil pump, as the crank case needs to be empty to avoid runaways, they had drip type oilers, which could be engine driven, so it could be considered an oil pump, but not the type in an oil filled crankcase.

I was responding to the bits about Detroits running backwards. Detroits use conventional "wet" oil pans/sumps and gear-type oil pumps.

That is interesting about the drip oilers... I suppose they use an external oil tank then???

Gary, Yes they all used an external tank. Video here is my Petter 12/14  which operates on the same principles as all other hot bulb oil engines I know of, 2 stroke, dry sump. Between the stack and fuel tank you can see the Madison Kipp lubricator operated by the eccentric rod. Holds about 2 quarts of oil and lubes the bore and rod bearing. What oil ends up in the sump has to be drained off periodicaly or it will cause a run away. The main bearings each have their own oil supply. Kind of rinky dink but best they knew at the time I guess? LOL

Of course an oil pump run backwards equals zero oil pressure.

Correct, but the Detroits used gear pumps. Thanks for the clarifications! We are sort of mixing up different era machinery here aren't we?
