Pipe Threads
« Reply #45 on: October 19, 2011, 01:49:05 AM »
Hi Guys,

I pulled the plugs out of the coolant ports of my engine.

Using a pair of vernier calipers I tried to see if there was any taper to the femail threads.
Although a bit difficult to measure, I have concluded that these BSP theads are "Parallel".

So it appears that a fitting with BSP Parallel threads is #1 choice with BSP Taper threads being #2.

However, straight threads only provide a mechanical junction and need a gasket or "O-ring" to seal.

A BSP Male Tapered fitting in a BSP Female Parallel will work but it only seals on a couple of threads.

A male NPT fitting is a worse fit in a BSP Parallel.

.

Cheers,

Bill

I still think fabricator's NPT tap is the way to go.  Keep It Simple - Smarty.

I'd also be tempted to JB Weld a nipple in but I guess you all know now that I'm latent hill folk.

I like simple.  Buy a BSPT nipple (which is the correct thread to mate with BSPP in engine) long enough and cut one end off and rethread NPT and carry on from there.  Not messing up the engine threads and no JB Weld.  It will actually come apart when necessary.  Your not dealing with any real pressure.

Darn you johna,

You're making simple sense.  Get the right part.  What a concept.

Did I read in this thread where these BSPT nipples can be found?

Just get the Taco pump flanges and you'll be good to go. They will probably cost less than a BSP fitting here in the US too.

With teflon tape the Brit fitting are good with our NPT; however, if you are fitting a NAPA 195 degree thermostat. I just hit a hurmpph! with mine as the casting id is tooooo small for the thrermostat 's two springy arms.  Grind and flush when is clears up as early winter just arrived in Georgia.

The threads are in a flange that comes off. Jeez, I'd have been done with this job a week ago, the taco flanges are a perfectly reasonable idea too, they are about 12 bux at Menards.

Hi Guys,

Today I went to see Jim Calder ( justlive offgrid.com ) to get some spare parts for my
Lister clone.   Jim had a lot of sorting to do since the container of diesel engines and parts
arrived from India a few weeks ago.

I figured I would get a few spare parts to have handy in case I ever need them.

Jim is keeping a twin 12 HP for himself from this shipment to operate his shop.
He has a couple of other Listers that run his off-grid home, but needed additional
power to operate his shop equipment.

He had his twin 12 HP un-crated as well as a couple others.   Overall I was impressed
with the quality.   The electric starters looked very robust and are mounted to
the engine with 1/2 inch plate steel.  I was also surprised to learn that the
electric start engines come with an alternator as well.

Jim said he had opened up one of the engines and found it very clean inside.

I got some spare gaskets, bearings, valves, rings and a few other parts.

I am looking forward to my winter project.

Cheers,

Bill

Here are some photos I took at Jim's place today...

THEY LOOK SO PRETTY...

One of these days..
I almost bought an all electric house recently but is was in a neighborhood that was for some dumb arse reason was not in the school district that the entire surrounding area was in.. Didn't want to make the kids change schools.
Otherwise I would have lowballed (hud home) and added some fluff to pay for a single and twin to run the house and my wvo processing

Hi Guys,

Today I went to see Jim Calder (Just Live Off Grid) to get some spare parts for my Lister clone.

Jim has a lot of spare parts (although not yet listed on his website).   If you are looking for something, just give him a call.

I thought I would stock up on a few common items..........

A couple of gasket kits......

Connecting rod bearings (both ends)

Valves, Valve Guides and Valve Springs

Piston Ring Set

Glow Plug (this baby is getting installed in the beginning).  I am in Canada and it can get cold up here !  :)

Cheers !!!
