inlet valve guide slipping
« on: September 20, 2011, 06:29:12 AM »
Hi
I am trying to get an old cs running for the first time in 30 years.
The inlet valve guide slips in and out of the head with ease, there has been frost damage could this have distorted the head?
Any other reasons of thie problem?
Thanks Tim

It is unlikely that frost damage has caused this.

The inlet guides will normally be an interference fit in the cylinder head, however in your case some more information is required first in order to answer your question:

Is the valve guide your refering to a new or is it a s/h item.

If the guide is a new item is it genuine or a Indian copy part.

Can you accuratly measure the o/d of the guide you have.

Check and see if the fost damage cracked the head in to the guide. TomT

It is possible someone tried to run with a non-standard valve guide... we can ascertain correct bore and o.d. on the guide for you and compare with your parts... if your head guide bore is worn, it is possible to machine an oversize replacement guide - or knurl a standard part to make it fit tight if the variance is within a limited range. Of course, you could also find a replacement head to remedy the problem as well.

Thanks very much for your replies.
It is the valve guide that came with the engine when I got it not sure if it is original or not.
I have measure the o/d it seems to be 19.03 mm or it may be a bit under, it is difficult to tell.
Not quite sure what to do about it, I will have a think about it over the weekend.
Once again thanks very much Tim

Ours measures 19mm or 0.75" right on the money. I'll have to look into the data book for original specs.
