injector pump banjo bolt thread size
« on: August 14, 2011, 07:37:34 PM »
My 6/1 has to have the injector pump bled if it sets several days/weeks.  I have to bleed through the "check valve" deal under the spring on the top of the pump.  It doesn't ever appear to be leaking fuel, just air is getting in somewhere when sitting.  I was reading through a lot of threads that suggest it might be a cracked banjo bolt.  That may be the case.  Does anyone know what the banjo bolt size is?  Is it metric, British whit or some other oddball?  Any source for a new one?

Thanks,
Jeff

I do not have the size or thread specs but that Bosch/Mico unit is metric. We can probably supply replacement line and fittings for you. Please email me direct at gsj@gci.net

When i had the stock fuel filter on my metro it would drip ever so slightly and a bit of air would get in making it not want to start and it ran poorly.  I replaced the stock fuel filter and it runs and starts first time every time.

I'll have to check the bolt in the future.  I just primed it the other day so I hate to open the system up again to re-prime.  My stock filter leaked a little but I think it stopped but perhaps that is where the air is getting in.

The rope filter will go sooner rather than later anyhow.  I was looking at the marine filters but are there better options?  By better I mean cheaper to acquire and cheaper to maintain for a given filtration size?

Diesel gman, I'll keep that in mind depending on what I find.

I went through this several times with the stock filter and every time I thought i had stopped it I had not.  Only after replacing the original indian fuel filter with a new one was the problem solved.  Also if you have any hose clamps in between the fuel tank and the engine make sure they are in good shape and tight.  I no longer shut the petcock on my fuel tank because it only takes one time to forget when starting the engine and you will almost certainly air into the system.

OK, tonight I worked on my oil leak on the suction tube for the oil pump where it meets the elbow to the oil screen.  After I worked on that I removed my banjo bolt on the injector pump and there is the infamous crack from top to bottom even through the bolt head.  Amazing!

Drum roll please....
The size is M14 dia with a 1.5 thread pitch.  Mine measures 25mm long but yours could be different with different banjo thicknesses.

Notice the crack even in the bolt head!

Ah the joy of finding the source of the problem! Were you able to find a new bolt at a local auto parts store?

Hi Tom,
I could not find one locally.  I found them cheap enough on ebay so I ordered one there.  It came with the bolt, banjo with a hose barb, and the two sealing washers.  It hasn't arrived yet so no news but it's pretty obvious mine was cracked.  Now I need to replace the Indian OEM filter assy and fuel lines.  I'm thinking of doing the outboard motor style gas tanks instead of the metal fuel tank that came with the engine.  Anyone have a good source to find the 6 gallon plastic ones cheap?

I used cheap in the above paragraph twice.  I guess that says something about me doesn't it?

I use the 6 gallon outboard tanks too, and like you I figured I might be able to find some pretty cheap.  Well after looking for a long time I just bought new ones at wally world, they were around thirty bucks last year, this year they are pushing fifty!  You can also get larger above deck plastic tanks at most boat stores.
