SL3 engine oil viscosity
« on: April 20, 2011, 09:53:33 PM »
As far as I can discover, Lister recommended an SAE10W oil for the SL3 under prevalent conditions in countries such as the UK. This seems mighty thin for a straight oil, especially when hot. What do forum members think. Any recommendations for alternatives?

I'd go for 15/40 mineral, or 10/30 if you can get it. Oil has come on a long way this past fifty years.
I like to think the older I get the wiser I become, but I'm not so sure.

15/40 CD rated oil should be fine for that engine. The only time we stay with straight weight oils is during break-in when we use a non-detergent variety and then usually 30wt.. Winter cold-starting would be another issue altogether though. The multi-weight oils are very effective for this type of service.
