6/1 head torque
« on: February 03, 2011, 06:39:27 AM »
Heya all,

I got a quick question here. The head gasket on my 6/1 is seeping coolant, and so I'm going to replace the gasket. Only thing is that I don't know is what is the torque spec for the head nuts. I searched a bit, but didn't hind anything for my 4 stud head, only for the 7 stud. Someone know the specs before I pull it apart this weekend?

For the the 6/1 I have the following Spec from my notes.

65 ft-lbs for for the 9/16" nuts and 100 ft-lbs for the 3/4" nuts.

The 9/16" nuts are only relevant if you are using a 7-stud head.

Hope it helps

Alright. Sounds good. I got the gasket and my torque wrench goes up to 100 ft-lbs and beyond. I'll be picking up some gasket sealant and copper wool tomorrow. Gonna pull it apart this weekend, so wish me luck! :P

Just a little advice to make things go a bit easier - to 'break' the head away from the cylinder, undo the nuts just a little (say about an eighth of an inch). Give the crank handle a mighty spin. CAUTION - do not undo the nuts too far as there is a chance of the entire cylinder lifting up and slamming down again.

Good to know. I was just gonna use one of Troy's Poly Hammers I got to tap it loose.  ;) But I'll give it a shot.

I may be wrong (I often am), but I think the 4 stud head bolts on the indian 6/1 has a torque spec of 150 lbs.

This is what I thought, too.

The Listeroids have cylinder studs that are approx 3/4" so I would say the torque should be 150 ft ft. pounds or a bit more.  That is the value I used.  It is very important is to bring the torque up evenly in about 4 incremental stages of diagonal tightening. That prevents squashing the gasket and distortion of head, cylinder block etc..

I’ve got an Indian spec that states-
Cylinder Head: 160 to 170 lb-ft (23 to 24 kg-m)

I think you may find that those figures are for 1" bolts/studs.

Could well be. It just states cylinder head.
As you rightly pointed out before, it does appear to be Indian specs.

My Indian Listeroid has 3 studs that hold the head to the jug, and 4 larger studs that are the head bolts. The nuts on my head studs take a 1-1/8" socket. I torqued them to 150 ft/lb.

The Specs I provided  (65ft lbs & 100 ft-lbs ) are from the information I have gathered on the original CS engines not Listeroids. I have no knowledge of the specs for the Indian made engines.
All of my data are from reputable sources and original Lister documentation/manuals.

My 12/2 metro was 170 ft/lb on head bolts, do not forget to torque and seal the studs int the block mine were loose and sloppy, precluding getting any kind of proper torque. use a stud wrench or double nut each stud and torque to what ever you deem proper for your engines head nuts then install head and set the head nuts the same. good luck
