ST 5 bearing size
« on: December 16, 2010, 06:34:12 AM »
Well I think it's time I poke my head back in here after being silent for quite some time. To update those that remember me, I got my 6/1 up and running around a year ago, and after a few teething problems in the beginning, it has worked daily without a hitch, logging several hundred hours. However the generator head has started to howl on me, and I think it may be the bearings.

So I ask, what size are the bearings in my ST 5 generator head?

My st5 uses a 6309 on the shaft side and a 6307 on the slip ring side of the case. However it seems that not all st5's are equipped with the same size bearings. So it would probably be best to open your case and see what you have.
I would also recomend sealed bearings.

Yup I'm playing with the old 6309 right now. Use it for a paper weight and an executive stress reliever on the desk.

Not all ST - 5 use the same size bearings.

I prefer a 2Z fo rthis aplocation and fill the front lart of the end bell 1/3 full of good grease.

A 2Z will over time pull some of this fresh grease in to lubricate itself and they can last longer  because of it

Thanks guys. I'll give the 6307 and 6309 a shot and see if they fit. If they don't, I can always bring em back. I want to take it apart and put it back together in one shot without lots of down time.  :)

I just said thats a bad idea.

Take it apart and remove the bearings find out what you need first
The bearing vender will probably not take back the ones you purchased if wrong and in any event you will make two trips if you are wrong.

You will need a bearing puller....
Get one from Canadian tire, they loan tools.

Yes I know Doug, it is a bit like playing the lottery here, however I am on very good terms with the place I got the bearings from and made sure that I could return them if they were wrong.  ;) Besides, making 2 trips is no big deal. The parts place is less than a kilometer from where I work.
