Hello ottawavalleyboy,
That pressed metal lifting lug sounds like a Lister original.  Only designed to lift the bare engine vertically, and not an engine with base, or a complete genset. It will be fine if you go carefully. The later and somewhat lighter aircooled units used the same setup. Again, only good to lift the bare engine into place vertically.
Enjoy your VA, a great old motor. Keep it loaded and warm, and it will outlast us all.  Mine ran all day pushing 4kw at 40*c and oil usage is near nil. Regards, Combustor.
Toys include- Lister CS 8/1, Lister VA SOM plant and some Aussie engines.

That jives with what the previous owner said.... who had it from new,it was factory built.

We took our time bringing it down off the truck, the fellow who owned it helped move it out of his workshop & got a couple of stitches in his scalp from the bucket of the front end loader, all of 75 years old....

I've been having a ball with it! here's a video clip....

I have a VA it is a great engine. They are like an old timex. Can take a lickin and keeps on tickin. They tend to run cool unless loaded down. 7.5 hp vs  8 hp for the 8/1. Must be do to pushing all that air.

Neat engine.  I thought they were suppose to be a lot louder than their water cooled brothers?

Ya, this has a distinct Klak that one can't hear with the water cooled ones, I think I may have a bit of piston slap to her....

You may not believe this but a black fellow came in the back of my house the 2nd time I ran her & said he hadn't seen one since leaving home.I took a guess & said "Barbados?" He smiled & nodded....he had followed the sound in from the street! 8)
Ya, these are practically bomb proof, I'm driving to Peterborough on Sat to pick up the gen head!
I was a little disappointed at first that it was air cooled, but now I wouldn't have it any other way....

Useful thread data here - found it very helpful in identifying various vintage fastenings.

A healthy diesel will have some knocks due to combustion.Beware of a quiet diesel. Frank C.

Thanks for the link Richard & it's reassuring to hear that caution about a quiet Diesel, thanks Frank!
