Update on the 8/1
« on: October 26, 2010, 12:13:22 PM »
Got a chance to mess around with the 8/1 some this past weekend. Here's what a few hours with Mr. Needlescaler gets you. Found LOTS of sand pockets, especially around the stud bosses and in the lower sump.....

Amazing what they paint over aint it? Oven cleaner from the dollar store will strip the rest of that paint if you desire. If you cant find Gyptol for a decent price this is what I used. Came from WW Grainger, same stuff, different Mfg.

Used it inside and out dries hard as glass.

Thanks for the input! I've got some Glyptal lined up ready to go. I may need more though for the gen head. Do you still have to have a commercial acct to purchase from Grainger? I haven't done business with them in probably 15 years.....

To remove the rest of the paint I'm using Dawn Power Dissolver:
http://www.dawn-dish.com/en_US/powerdissolver.do

It's more expense than dollar-store oven cleaner and it's slower, but it does work (believe it or not!) and it's a lot nicer to be around.

Cheers!

I went over to Grainger looking for gray and found it also comes in clear and green but not Witte Gray so I'm back to a brush and Derusto Industrial Gray.  But green?  I wonder how close to Lister Green it is?

cgwymp,
After needle scaler, pressure washing is great.  After that I couldn't feel any trace of grit on the castings.

Ain't it, though? My procedure was needle scaler, pressure washer, Power Dissolver, then pressure washer again. Got it clean!

Thanks!

I’m curious about the surface texture of the casting. Is this a result of the needle cleaning, environmental exposure, or are the castings like that from new?

That's what was under the Indian body filler. Pretty nasty, hmm? About what I expected, though....

I didn’t realise they were that bad! I’ve never actually seen a Listeroid, I’m used to handling Dursley castings. So they use filler to smooth all that over before painting?

Yes, thickly & sloppily. It doesn't look like typical body filler -- more like plaster of paris. They also slobber the paint on thickly & sloppily. The linkages on mine were fairly stiff before I cleaned them off.

If you'd like to see a Listeroid firsthand, I'd gladly trade you straight out for a Dursley engine....  ;-)
