8/1 SOM? Is that right?
« on: October 23, 2010, 09:48:56 PM »
What is it? I was told it is an 8/1. Since it has a ring gear I believe it to be a start -o -matic. ??
Where would the starter mount? ls this a cs based engine? Is it the same as a 5/1 6/1 just incresed rpm? (obviously different flywheels?)
What size gen would it run? The rule is 8hp per kw, so that means a 4kw generator. However could I hook up a 5kw to the piece? If my load is not 5kw the gen should turn as easily as generator output? (required load) Correct?
Thanks
Wags

Hmm.. how do I put in a picutre?

S/N 450819 Does this mean something to anyone?

‘Since it has a ring gear I believe it to be a start -o -matic. ??’
The standard CS didn’t have a ring gear.
‘Where would the starter mount?
The SOM unit used the alternator as a starter motor.
‘Is it the same as a 5/1 6/1 just increased rpm?’
The 8/1 had an aluminium piston, only four rings and different governor.
‘What size gen would it run?’
Lister matched them to a 4.5kva alternator so 3.5kw.
‘S/N 450819 Does this mean something to anyone?’
That means the plate was fitted to the 450th 8/1 produced in 1959.
Hard to say if it was fitted to your engine, without pics. Use Photobucket and transfer to here.

Ah, the jewel showed up tonight. I will take a couple of pics and send them to you. For some reason the pics I was sent via cell phone will not forward into e-mail.
IT RUNS!
Bled the system, crank, ok, crank, crank, crank. .. fired up.
I need to get a tach on it to see if the rpm at wot is right.
I only ran it for a minute or two.
I see some small parts I need.... like a grease cup thing for the rocker arm lube.
There are 2 tubes near the injector. 1 is fuel in obviously. The other comes out above the fuel inlet (on the injector). It goes about 6" and terminates just to open atmosphere. What is this line for?
Thanks
Wags

Oh, can someone get me pointed in the direction of a manual/ spec book/ maintenance book??

Its a fuel return line for bypass fuel from the injector, return to tank or a collection vessel.
