6 HP air cooled engine
« on: October 05, 2010, 05:06:47 AM »
OK so I need some help or advice with an engine I acquired. It is a 6 HP 1000 RPM Petter air cooled with flywheels one normally where you would find it and the other mounted outside of the fan. Both flywheels are the same size. Other than strapping it down to see if it explodes how could I find out if the engine could run 1800 RPM without blowing up. I need a little more power for my dads genset and if I could safely run this engine at 1800 it would work great. It should give it at least 3 more HP. I did have it up to 1800 for a short time and it did run pretty smooth. I would love someones advice. I might just have to get a little larger engine. It truly is a one of a kind engine with the 2 flywheels. DD

What is the diameter of the flywheels? Merely running them for a while at 1800 is not proof that you have any safety margin. A good start would be to completely strip all paint ant body filler before you can have any idea what the castings look like. Inside the paint may be castings that would make you nervous at 1000 rpm. :o

I believe it would not only be foolish but dangerous to run one of these engines above the rated speed...

Some of these engines are scary at 1000RPM.

It could be done with a lot of modifcations, but why?

Just get an engine that fits the parameters you are trying to acheive.

If you proceed make sure you video it and stand WAY BACK!

If the engine is the same as the one in the picture it is a petter copy and  can be run safely at 2200 rpm

I have five petter engines of that type.

That is my engine. the guy i got it from just posted the picture. At 1800 it ran very smooth. I just thought it would increase the power and I could direct drive a alternator. Thanks
