I think I know what you mean.
The valves should be lower than the face of the head for clearance reason's.
So the seating part of the valve seat is the lower part.
Just grind them in a little and that's all they need.

No its just the way its made.
If it was working fine before you removed the head then just clean off the carbon and grind in the valves and put it back on.
Its the machining for the seat you are looking at.
I would not get to worried about it.
If your still not sure then post a picture for a clearer view.

i will try and post picture i think i might have a problem because the valves it has been running on are about 1/2 an inch below the head face.

thanks Ray.

I believe that the head of the valve is supposed to be between .055 and .100 below the head surface.

Lister or Listeroid ? Do you know the history of the engine? If it is one that has had a lot of fingers in it or swapped parts you never know what might be the case.  Possibly a 6/1 valves in a 10/1 head.

Pictures needed.

If this links the photo is of a 10/1 head surface.

I seem to remember reference to machining into the water jacket in the process of installing seat inserts but that may have been just a fluke or casting flaw. My thought is it may be more expensive to install new seats, guides and valves than it is to buy a new head. There may be someone chime in that has actually had it done on one of these heads.

You did not answer if it was an English lister engine or an Indian clone. That will most likely be necessary to know. I would be inclined to have the casting core plugs removed and see if you can get an idea of how much meat might be around the seat area before you started spending money on machining for new seats. Even if they cannot finish satisfactorily they would most likely charge you set up time at least.

I think there are some parts suppliers on line that would quote a price. I am in canada.

Edit: Here is a link to a lister manual PDF.   http://www.woodnstuff.ca/    go to the heading articles and drp down Lister manual. It gives a cut away view of the head in the valve area. I think this is genuine lister so dont take for granted the clones might be anything like. I would not even expect this view to be very indicative of the water jacket side or thickness.
