Grundfos pumps
« on: September 03, 2010, 05:37:12 PM »
Anyone else using these fractional hp circulating pumps for engine cooling water??  I am going to install this pump, adapted to George's thermostat housing and hoses, to a remote hopper tank that will have a beer cooler  ;D ;D type heat exchanger for hot water heat for the house. This is the emergency system as a pmg is now here.

Yes they work great in my opinion.

Here is a pix, it took very little modification to make it fit.

I use one too. Great pumps. I changet on on my boiler last year, the old one was from 1971. It was stuck from being stopped all summer. The newer pumps have no problems with being unused for 6 or more months.

I have one installed on my twin and one installed on my 6/1. Both are outstanding, no problems. I've attached two links if you want to see the existing set up. In the future, I plan to buy a heat exchanger, use one of my Grundfos Brute pumps to circulate a seperate water circuit to a shut off electric hot water heater. I've attached a couple of Youtube links on my existing setups. You'll note the large water tank on my twin, this provides a large heat sink, ans added security should I develop a leak while I away on duty (12 hr shift + travel time) during hurricane operations. My wife knows what the red button does in an emergency, but thats about it. I buy my pumps two at time when on sale, here is the link:

Here is link to my existing setups.

I think these pumps are an excellent value and highly recommend them

These pumps are supposed to be installed with the motor shaft horizontal.  It it on the label of the one in my home heating system.  A contractor installed one incorrectly once and it failed in about a year.

overbore,
These pumps are an excellent solution.  My cooling problems have been over since I installed one on my 6/1.

Overbore. Buy the smallest you can get, and it will still be too big.
On my 6/1 the pump is running at 35 watts and that is more than needed.

overbore,

I'm running a small circulator pump to move coolant through a 10" X 10" radiator with a 12v automotive fan.
Works very well.

Hi Veggie,

Nice system.  My two questions are:

1.)  How much power do these Grundfos pumps use?

B.)  What the Heck are they using for a flexible exhaust pipe?  Shop vac hose? ;D

Gents. many thanks for your vids and suggestions.  I am going to install the 1/25hp pump on the horizontal plane thanks for all the tips but Georgia is still too darn hot to get Manual Labor, my private minority "helper" to get he pad hole dug.

Hi Casey,

1] They use about 50 watts.

B] I'm using an automotive exhaust flex hose attached to the automotive muffler on my 6/1. Temperatures exiting my muffler are down around 150f.
The hose is rated to 300f. I think the correct term for the hose is "Automotive crush poof exhaust hose".

cheers,
veggie

The next two questions:

1.)  What are you using for a muffler.  It sounds very effective.

B.)  What kind of quick disconnect fittings are you using on the PEX?

1]   2" automotive muffler with internal reversing flow. Almost eliminates the exhaust noise.

C] Piping is standard automotive heater hose with "cam-lock" quick connect fittings. (all in 3/4")

Hi Veggie,

I guess the cherry bomb on mine will need changing to get your level of quietness.  Very impressive for such a simple solution.

I'll check with my local NAPA to find out about quick disconnect.  I have quite a bit of PEX and quick disconnect would be pretty handy.  The two questions from this last viewing are:

1.)  That seems to be a very nice camera based on the video.  What are you using.

B.)  How are you moving the water to the water tank in this second YouTube?

1] Simple Canon digital still camara which has a video feature. (Just a cheapie)

F] It's just a gravity feed overflow tank sitting above the radiator. No need for circulation thru the tank. The system is none pressurized and the thermostat is 190f.
