The plate I'm looking at is the spec ID for the whole set, it's not the engines plate.

Try and get that photo looking down on the head, that would resolve it immediately.

Chris, not the whole head, just the rocker cover, it's just held on with a thumb nut, takes 30 seconds to remove.

Zagato, here is a link to a thread in the for sale section of this forum. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Lister-CS-5-1-stationary-engine-/250662571122?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_BOI_FarmingEquipment_RL&hash=item3a5ca74c72

Thanks Scott, I found the one you mention on E-bay tonight and used his genuine spec number as an example but the one given by the owner of the one I hope to buy is 208-10 which does not make any sense to me............

I am looking for one that is a runner and good condition.

Having previously owned a 6-1 for many years, and now being the owner of a 3-1, I can confirm that the ONLY readily discernible difference lies under the rocker cover. On the 6-1, the rocker shaft was held on by a single large stud, whereas in my 3-1 the shaft is held on by two saddles each of which has two bolts.
Regards.

Thanks.
We have determined that it was a 3/1 by the feature you mention. There are two other visible differences under the rocker cover on the 3/1, the casting bridge across the middle of the head is straight with a little kink, and the valves are closer together.

The owner has changed his advert to a 3/1 instead of a 5/1, so it was a genuine mistake.

This does seem to be a nice engine, runs evenly, no knocks, show winner last three years, comes on it's own trailer, £400 The seller is a genuine bloke he is in Stranraer, Scotland.  Advert on the Pre-loved website.
