Lister vs Petter
« on: April 06, 2010, 11:24:05 PM »
I've ca looked through this board and elsewhere, but I can't find a description of the differences between the two.  I'm pretty sure some of you here might know  ;) and I'm hoping you can explain it to me.
I have no idea what to do next...

One was made by Lister from Dursley in the UK the other was made by Petters and son also in the UK. The two companies merged in the 80s where both product lines were merged and eventualy rationalized.

A petter engine and a lister engine are complete different brands like AMC and Chrysler right up untill they were merged. Does that help?

No, I got that.  But I'd been given to understand that because of possible patent infringement issues the two engines differed.

I didn't have any particular types in mind, so I'm probably asking the question badly.  The Otto cycle engine uses a spark to ignite a fuel/air mixture in a 4 cycle process.  To circumvent the patents James Atkinson invented the Atkinson Cycle Engine, which is also a 4 cycle.  Is there a similar relationship involving the development of Petter engines?

No. Lister & Petter were two dfferent companies that designed their own engines independently, Lister purchased the Petter company in the 1980's if memory serves me correctly.

Lister came under the auspices of the Hawker Siddeley Group, which already owned Petter at that time.

The two companies were put together as Lister-Petter Ltd., but effectively Petter engines got killed off, and now there's almost nothing left of either company.
