Head gasket leaking
« on: December 22, 2009, 10:17:48 AM »
Just reassembled 8/1 having fitted glow plug kit from Stationary Engine Parts. It certainly improves the starting. However, I am getting gas bubbles in the coolant, so clearly the new head gasket from the same source isn't sealing. I fitted it dry, with the big nuts torqued down to 100lbft, and the little ones to 65lbft.

One thing I notice is that the big hole in the centre of the new gasket is a little smaller than the old one, and is therefore right on the edge of the cylinder bore, not a little outside it.

The old gasket was a Coopers, but where I can I optain a new Coopers gasket for it. The ones from Stationary Engine Parts looks fine apart from that difference.

Any suggestions, please

Dear Somian,

I've got some copper c.h.g.'s for this engine. Have a look on my
web site at www.e-gaskets.co.uk

Kind regards,

Geoff

Dear Somian,

Forgot to add to my last posting.  The engine bore for the 8/1 should be 114mm.
The bore on the c.h.g. should be 117.5mm

These people are genuine lister agents and can supply genuine head gaskets for CS engines. Ask for Mike he knows all about these old engines.  http://www.sleeman-hawken.co.uk/

I had the same problem and documented it here.  Ended up to be a cracked head.  Not an unusual problem with a Lister.
