COV plug extraction
« on: November 17, 2009, 02:02:50 PM »
Any suggestions as to how to extract the inner plug from the cylinder head where a compression changeover valve would be if it wasn't an 8/1. I want to fit a glow plug to improve cold starting, but at the moment I can wind as much load onto the extractor bolt as I dare and run the engine at the same time, and it still hasn't moved

What next, drill it and tap it for a larger extraction bolt??

Your ideas please.

Thanks,

Ian

i removed the inner plug on my 8/1 after soaking the plug with red x to soften up the gunk on the in side of the comet chamber then over two weeks kept the extractor bolt as tight as i dare till it finale moved out , this was with much sweating as i expted the bolt to fail with the force that i  was using.

David,
Presumably you had the head off to do this. I was (I stress was) hoping to do this without removing the head. That said, the reason I am trying to fit the glow plug is because it doesn't start very well, I suspect due to stuck rings, so if I take the head off I may as well take the piston out, and free the rings as well.

Somian

I posted this the other day but it seemed to disappear.

You could make a slide hammer like this with your existing extractor bolt. I would suggest that you use the lock nut to hold it tight in the plug. I would suggest you get your engine nice and hot before you try this method. It might work. Its not much work if you need to remove the head and you can even reuse your existing head gasket. Genuine rings are available for about £25 a set from http://www.sleeman-hawken.co.uk/ for the chrome bore engines and plain bore they are both different.

David S your technique worked on mine as well. I took the head off and left it with diesel fuel in the precombustion chamber for two weeks. I then tightened the extractor bolt a bit more it and gradually came out. It was as well I took the head off, because I removed the piston and found the rings fine, but pitting on the valve seats, exhaust in particular. I ground in the valves and reassembled it and it now has much more compression than before. I hope to refill it with water tonight, re-prime the fuel system and to see if it will now start better. The curious thing is that the cylinder head is very corroded above the piston, but as to why I have no idea.
