Who Glyptal's their generator head?
« on: December 08, 2009, 08:10:20 PM »
Hey guys, I'm getting ready to tear into an ST Gen head (check the bearings etc). Any recommendatoins on using glyptal to coat the interior? Pros, cons?

Thanks, Randy B

There are now about 775 hours on my st5 head. The bridge rectifier burned out the first time a load was placed on it. Then bearings started screaming at about 100 hours (no I hadn't opened it up to grease and inspect). And 550 hours a cold solder joint broke where the windings are connected together. Other than that it has been a good generator  :-\. So doing the things you now plan are definitely good insurance that you will get trouble free service for many hours. I believe that if the windings had been coated with glyptal the solder joint may not have broken.

I've done 2 ST heads so far and I can't see any cons other than mask where you don't want it. I also do my ametures just because it is there and easy to do....good stuff!

Thats pretty expensive, and not realy the best choice for DIYer with a gen head.

Stop by an electrcial suply house and see about 1 or 2 cans of 1201A ( spray bomb version ). 1 can should be good enough to do anything up to an ST10.

There are also generic versions of the same porduct made by many different paint companies just try and stay with a quality varnish rated at class F or higher

It soaks in better because its thinner and you don't need a brush you just blow it in. Some places you can't reach witha brush like the back of the nuckel where the winding exits and enter the lamintaions of the core.

Honestly I never brushed glyptal. I have brushed on some PD George clear varnish in places where I have cut ito a winding to do a quick repair.
I have used 1201 thinned with Xylene and sprayed.

I guess because brushing is slow and spraying is fats with much better penetration and cover.

Coleman Canada used to use a lot of the 1201 and pour it into lanterns and swish it around to coat the steel and prevent rust, Dodge Gear company used to brush it into gear boxes instead of spraying . They were the only people I know that didn't spray the product...

I would think when you ran a brush over the windings it would drip, and run. Thick in some places and thin in others. I would think it would be a mess........but still better than not doing anything. I have never tried it so take it for what it is worth.....

Here's a way of looking at it.

You want to paint a bail of hay ( why I dunno know ).....
Blowing a coat of 1201A might take 15 minuts and as you paint you can come back a few times and ssee where it soaked in and add a little more or less to ecconomise.
Brush it on and using the thicker 1201 and you are going to take a lot longer and have to work that brush to get into all the places.....
If you thin 1201 with xylene so it soaks in like 1201A and flows better and it dripps like crazy and its even harder to brush.....

Right, best to spray it...I had assumed that was obvious.  I guess if I didn't have spray gun setup, I would buy a spray can.  However, if I bought a spray can, I would get the higher viscosity 1201B and not the thin 1201A.  If you have spray gun, you can of course control the viscosity by how much you thin it.  Glyptal has a lot of practical uses around the shop.  Here's the URL to the glyptal product data sheets:

I was reading this thread and just Googled to see where I could buy it.  In the process, I came across this thread about using it inside of engine blocks...

Also, if you scroll about 2/3 of the way down, check out the electric motor that one of the posters just finished rebuilding.   :o
