Small Yanmars at Surplus Center
« on: September 08, 2009, 01:40:36 AM »
Surplus center has 177 pretty cool little two cylinder Yanmars that are very similar to the CAT's that everone bought like hot cakes.
These Yanmars don't have alternators or fans installed, but they do come with mufflers.  Get em while they last!  I wish I had some extra cash....

they have had those engines since long before the perkins and the cats

quite frankly it has puzzled me what the deal is with them, they are a bit more expensive
but not too bad, sure don't sell like the perks or cats

I'd bet that the Yanmars are about the same as the Perkins/Cats but not quite as good a value price wise, so they don't sell as fast.  This dealer buys surplus inventory from manufacturers and resells to the public.  Maybe as the economy continues to deteriorate more Shinbura engines will come up for auctions where this dealer buys and we'll get more chances to get bargins on our toys!  If any of us will be able to spare money for our hobbies  :-\ ?!!                                            Leland

This is truly a sickness...

I'm sitting here wanting one for NO sane reason except it's different and kind of cute.

Especially when I just bought a CAT and have no immediate use for it either...

I think I need my head examined as I've clearly lost it.

Steve, you have clearly lost it and there is no cure!

i too am thinking about one (or a dozen) of the little engine's, not that i need to take
on another design project to impliment their use.

step away from the little red/yellow engine bob and steve...

lol

yes its an addiction

i blame mine on growing up a poor boy, always on the eternal hunt for an engine to put on a gokart, and later
always on the hunt for an affordable (read that heap) car, and then the eternal and sometime nocturnal hunt for
parts to keep it (heap) on the road (even if just barely).

funny how after growing up that way, in 53 years i have never owned a new car/truck of my own, bought wives new cars
but never had a desire for one myself???

yup,, its a disease!

last vehicle i bought was two years ago, it was a 83 toyota diesel pickup,, hell i was and still am as tickled with it as i would
be a new car (ok maybe thats a lie, p/s and a/c and then maybe i would be just as tickled)

luckily this disease isn't terminal, some of us would be dead long before now!

maybe its not, "he who dies with the most toys wins" but rather "he who dies with the most iron wins"

:)

           Hello all,
Just curious to know if anyone has compared claimed fuel consumption of the Yanmar with other similar units.
Some research I did last year showed the current Yanmar range to be noticeably lower consumption, specially when
slowed down to their mid speed range. They certainly have a great reputation in small earthmovers etc, so they could
be excellent value at the price,   Regards,  Combustor.
Toys include- Lister CS 8/1, Lister VA SOM plant and some Aussie engines.

Oh sure...

Now you pipe up after I've already bought a yellow one...

Now I REALLY need to buy a gray one to compare.

It probably has already been asked and answered but.... Are these engines CAT/PERK/YAN direct or indirect injected?

Was thinking about this further while driving tonight.

I'm VERY glad that I bought the Cat.

Why?

Because it's made in the USA!

And Bob,

1983 was a very good year!

I drive a 1983 Honda Civic Wagon to and from work almost every day.

Initial purchase price = $345 off Craigslist
Total maint investment = $100 in brake and tune up parts

Needs paint

Gets 42 mpg

I LOVE my beater car!!!

Yes, 1983 was a very good year!

 ;)

yaaa i can relate

my little toyota pickup does about 36 highway, it runs 55 to 60mph just fine
although it will run faster it seems like it is in the groove at 55, so i figure why push it
i am in no hurry.

the body ain't much, but it purrs right along just fine

yup i love my diesel powered beater pickup

Slightly off subjects - neither the Yanmar or MPG but rather I'm looking for a vertical shaft unit to eventually replace the Kawasaki 22 HP gas twin that's in my zero turn mower.   I'm thinking 12 to 15 HP diesel should do the job.

Does anyone have any ideas?
