How to mount the Cat Diesel?
« on: September 03, 2009, 05:35:26 PM »
Anyone given much thought as to how they are going to mount their Cat diesel?. I'm thinking of making a base out of 2x2 box metal to fit the engine, generator, battery etc. I just haven't decided on how to mount the engine to mitigate vibration. Any thoughts?.....  Randy B

We should see if we can track down the motor mounts that the OEM was planning on using.

Also maybe the rear bellhousing as it also has mounting pads on it.

Would save lots of time...

where is our engineer friend when we need him?  :)

me? i like a 3 point mount, much like a 3 legged stool it is self leveling
which takes stress off the engine.
maybe 2 in back, 1 in front

it really depends on what you are driving?  where it is to be mounted? and how you are driving it?

lots of ways to do it, some easier than others, some better than others in my opinion.

my plan is to use a very similar mount as the mounts used to bolt the engine to the pallet but a bit heavier.   Instead of flat plate for the uprights that bolt to the sode of the block I am using angle that comes up from my frame

I'm thinking resilient rubber mounts.

Hence why I'd like to know what the OEM manufacturer was planning on using.

Or, might build a steel subframe to hold the engine and genhead and then float the whole assembly on rubber mounts.

Just my thoughts...

the pics I have show the engine and driven acces rigidly mounted together , cradle mounted on rubber isolators.  I am mounting the gen and engine together ridgidly to a frame, frame will sit on isolation mounts . Ill have some pice added to my build thread in a couple of days

I think your going to be surprised at just how smooth this engine runs, I have cranked one of mine  a couple of times and its dead smooth , I really dont see any need in huge isolation mounts.  I am only putting them under my frame to avoid any possible "drumming" since my gen shed has a wood floor

I think I'll be going with rubber isolators too. I found some nice ones at Grainger! Nothing fancy (like the ones I'll be getting for my Lister), but these should work out pretty well........ unless someone else has a better idea! I'm still not positive though, all the engine/generator set ups that I've seen have the engine attached to the frame vis some type of motor mount, then the bottom of the frame has isolators

the engine and gen need to be solidly mounted on a common frame so that the belt remains tight

Mount the engine, generator and drive system to a subframe. Use various types of resilient mount buiscits to a foundation frame that is bolted to the floor. ?
That's what I did for wy 25/2, but it ran so smooth when I de-rated the RPM that I bolted them together.
Ashwamegh 25/2 & ST12
Lister SR2 10Kw 'Long Edurance' genset on a 10 gallon sump/skid,
Onan 6.5NH in an old Jeager Compressor trailer and a few CCK's
