On the 8/16 the COV was removed and the hole plugged. This provides for a start and run compression ratio of 17.5 to 1. Nice project !

Hello Guys,

I haven't abandoned my post!
I`m just having endless trouble logging in and when I'm logged in, I cannot post, tells me I'm a spammer! I've registered for a new user and waiting for the confirmation email. Hopefully this post will go through, because sometimes it does work  ???

I still haven't received any info on the dimensions for the Spring Link from anyone, pretty please  ;)

I'm planning on starting "her" 2day with the 8/1 flywheels, I was waiting for new Gib-keys I ordered and they arrived yesterday.
I'll report back later if there was any problems.

OK... spring link dimensions:

The spring is 2.5" end-to-end, the actual springy bit is 1.75"

The L shaped piece is 1.75" centre-to-centre across the top, and 2.5" centre-to-centre vertically. There's two adjusters on mine, I'm not sure what the slightly higher of the two does (it's not connected to anything), but that's about 1.75" from the pivot point.

The linkage is 8" overall, looks like the top piece is 5", and about 3" including the adjuster screw.

See the photos in my gallery: http://listerenginegallery.com/main.php?g2_itemId=2455

Thumbnails:

I'm out for the rest of the day, unfortunately, but can get more measurements of other bits this evening, if you need them.

Hi AdeV,

The parts I'm missing are marked in red: (Curtice of your picture  ;))

1) The long flat bar with the small offset at the bottom and the slide gap in it,
2) the spring,
3) and the small connecting rod adjuster at the bottom.

I've got the L-shaped arm at the bottom. With a Lister without the SOM solenoid has only a long connecting rod between the bottom & top.

The small adjuster on the other picture you show is to push a micro-switch that doesn't look like its fitted on your SOM. It disconnects the starter motor winding in the alternator when the engine gets up to speed. (It shows the control gear that the engine has started)
The one behind it, with the spring, is your governor speed adjuster.

I'm going to need all the dimentions of the long flat-bar spring link to be able to make one myself.
Thanks for your help thus far, I'm sorry I didn't make myself clear in the beginning  :(

So, here goes:

First, here's a bunch of pictures of the linkage, assembled & disassembled:

And then, the drawings of each bit + dimensions:

Now somehow - don't ask me how, I managed to fail technical drawing, back when I was at school.... I've no idea why   ::)::) ;D

The bits I missed off the drawings....

The thickness of the slide bar is approx 1/8"; and the bottom adjuster is formed from a 1/2" square bar, with the corners filed off (presumably to make it look a bit tidier & to prevent finger cuttage.

The pins are roughly 1/8" diameter, but I don't suppose that's particularly critical. The spring has a couple of washers around it's (captive) pin, I guess to make sure it doesn't bind on the slide post.

The 1/4" hole in the "foot" of the slider bar is large enough that the adjuster passes cleanly through, and is not threaded.

Interesting that there's subtle differences between the spring & bottom adjuster between the photos I took this morning (showing the running engine), and of the disassembled pieces (from the non-running engine)... e.g. the lock nut is at the bottom of the adjuster on the running motor, and the spring doesn't have a "captive" pin.

Right, that's your lot for tonight :) I'll be back there tomorrow afternoon, after the British GP if you want more (so about 3pm... GMT+1)

Thank you very much Ade,

I'll download all the pictures and see if I can draw up a sketch of it from your info. Its going to take a while, I'll get back to you if I miss something.

You really went out of your way to help, thanks again!

Just to update on my progress on my Lister,
I started it yesterday, all seems well and the balancing seems much better than with the previous flywheels.
I'm just worried about one thing, it sounds different than before, a bit louder, like a loud (diesel)knocking sound. I checked my big end bearing again and made sure the oil pump is working OK, all seems normal.

I think it might be due to the new parts I fitted in conjunction with the flywheels:
1) New head (Did the bumping clearance, before someone asks ;) I removed the barrel as well)
2) New fuel pump (Need to check the injection timing again)

It might just be that its normal with the higher compression now that the valves are seating properly exec., and I'm just not use to it. I'll try and get my diesel-mac friend over 2day to have a "Listern" (sic)

Have a nice day guys,

:) ;) :D Posted by dubbleUJay[/b]from South Africa!! >:( :( :o

Knocking sound - could be a loose flywheel.

New fuel pump (Need to check the injection timing again)

That should be checked before you start to prevent pounding the b/e bearing.

Hi RAB,

Definitely not a flywheel.

I did set the injector timing again before I started, but it was late at night, I could have made a stupid mistake, one cannot get to much wrong with it once you know how, but I should have left it for the morning I suppose  ::)
I'll check later when I have a chance, but I'm still waiting for a friend to arrive. He's going to check it anyway, so I thought, why do it twice?  ;)

Thanks

AdeV,

Just to show you, (and probably brag a little ;) ) all your measurements weren't in vain!

Here's a pic of what I made:

(I'm still learning how to use the forum, so here's a link to the bigger picture. I cannot get my thumbnails to be click-able like your above)
http://listerenginegallery.com/main.php?g2_itemId=2523

Took me a day, but it was definitely worth the trouble & some swearing!  ::)
I tried to use Stainless Steel throughout, only parts not SS are the 3 washers I used for spacers. I cheated a bit, I used my old linkage and cut it down to size. To my surprise, it was also SS! Someone must have made it before.

Anyway, thank you again for all your trouble and don't hesitate to ask if I can help with something. (If I can obviously)

Now lets see if Stan is going to make his part in the other thread!  ;)

Thanks again!

Now Stan, if you walk over to your side of the Big Hole in Kimberley, I'll drop you a piece from this side of the Big Hole in Kimberley!  ;D
It should get there in a weeks time if Mr. Gravity at the GPO doesn't get his dirty paws on it!

I'm way off topic now, sorry guys, just a personal pun for Stan  ;)

Yes, that's right!  Our Sullivan Mine (now decommissioned) was the largest Silver Lead Zinc mine in the world.  It produced over 1 billion dollars worth of metal in it's time.  Our city is named after your mine.
