Removing valve lifters from a 25/2
« on: June 06, 2009, 05:19:42 PM »
Guys,

How do you remove the lifters from a 25/2? I have the guides loose, but how do you remove the exhaust lifters? They have the enlarged top for the compression release, and I can't see how they come apart.

Thanks!
Tommy

Hi Tommy,
The lifter "top". the part the compression release lifts should unscrew from the lifter, under the mushroom head you should see flats on two sides of both the lifter & mushroom top, to allow it to be unscrewed.

Thanks for the tip, Low Speed Life!
Got the lifters out, now I need to reshape and reface them to make them turn. Is there a way I can do this in a lathe using say, emory cloth? I got some quotes from some machine shops for this and they want a fortune, $65 each!   :o
I was thinking I could just chuck it in a lathe and shape the face by hand with emory cloth in successively finer grits. I also thought I heard George at Utterpower say to wipe the face of the lifter on a piece of glass with emory cloth on top...in a figure eight pattern and that would get them close....

Tommy:

you can do them in a lathe with a tool post grinder or similar , or

if it were me, i would make a trip down to an automotive machine shop
someplace that does valve/seat grinding and has a sioux valve grinder
have them reface the lifters using the stem grinder, it will work and don't let them tell
you it won't, just make sure they use the coolant and dress the stone before they start.

after which you will have a perfectly flat and perpendicular face (relative to the body), which will be fairly
smooth, finish by hand on an oil stone with oil using the figure 8 stroke
don't worry about trying to keep them flat, they will start to get a convexity to the face which is
the proper profile anyway,, you cannot help but get convexity doing it by hand.

the sioux stem grinder can knock all 4 tappets out in under 5 minutes, including setup time, dressing the stone
and refacing all 4 tappets.

a 6 pack late in the day works fine, just drop them off with the guy and tell him you will return after work with
whatever he wants to drink.

edit:
you might also ask if they have the rocker grinder attachment for their sioux grinder, likely is is buried in the cabinet
and has never been used. if they have it, have them reface your rockers as well. that too is about a 5 minute job.
but might take longer if the guy has never used the attachment before and has to learn how to set it up.
