Flywheel Blowup Pictures
« on: May 17, 2009, 10:42:40 PM »
Hi guys
Here is an interesting insurance company report with pictures of  powerplant Flywheel Blowups.
Even though turn of the twentieth century steam plants the same factors as with Listers CS development: the easiest power output increases were with RPM changes. Right up to the point of a blow-a-part that is.
Also interesting is that reading the text the insurance company considered flywheel blowup pay outs to be more expensive than boiler explosions.
Towards the last pages there is a chat of safe 60 MPH rim speed flywheels 30 feet down to 2 feet. A Lister/iod 24" spoked cast flywheel is judged as safe only to 955RPM.

Look under the Historical Literature heading. A long down load but worth it.

Great link !! Some of those pictures look like the aftermath of a shell burst !!  There is a table of maximum safe flywheel speeds and it makes interesting reading. A spoked , 1 piece , cast iron flywheel of 2 ft diametre is safe upto 955 RPM , 3 ft diametre , 637 RPM !!!  Are any of you 'roid owners feeling nervous ?  Safe speeds for a 30 ft (!!!) flywheel vary from 32 to 64 RPM depending on construction ! Speeds are based on a 3:1 safety ratio !!!

That's why I slowed my 1000 rpm 'roid to 750. As long as I own it, it will NEVER go north of 750.

Also, who was the braintrust that came up with the idea of driving the governor with a BELT?? In just about every incident described, the disaster had something to do with the governor belt coming off, slipping, something falling on the belt causing it to come off,, you'd think they would have started drawing some conclusions here....connecting some dots.

We could drive it with a GEAR, with an off-center hole ?  Is that better ?  Sometimes ?

Probably a maintenance issue more than anything else.

Ummmmmm...how hard would it be to design the governor so that if the belt broke, it would stop?   ::)

You have fail safe and fail deadly lol....

For those of us old enough to remember the 70s and 80s the cold war brought us that wonderful soviet comand and control system for nuclear weapons called Perimet ( dead hand ).

In case of a comunications / control failure assume wwIII and hit back with everything.

THANK GOD They don't build many engines that way lol

Some Soviet aircraft did have engines like that !!  However , they were the only nation in WW2 savvy enough to build battle tanks with diesel engines !! Not for nothing were Shermans called Tommy or GI cookers !!!

Zest comes from a lemon peel and makes you pucker.  Adrenalin comes from ducking large chunks of flying iron and makes you pee your pants.  :-[
