Got my new engine!
« on: April 23, 2009, 03:51:32 PM »
I picked up my new Powerline 6/1 electric start engine Monday.  I just about killed my neighbors poor little trailer getting it to my hangar, but it made it unscratched ;D  Finally finished uncrating it and cleaning it up yesterday, overall I am very pleased with the apparent quality.  The engine has several nice features such as a massive cast iron valve cover, a good quality fuel tank with nice fuel lines and of course that big electric starter hanging off of the side of the case!  I added approximately one gallon of diesel to the tank, bled the fuel filter and hand cranked it untill I heard the injector squeak a couple of times.  I continued to spin it and released the compression release and the engine popped of immediately! I only ran it for about 15 seconds because I did not have any water in the cooling system.  When it ran the engine ran it hopped around a bit, but I guess this is to be expected as it is actually sitting on two pallets and the pallets flex quite a bit.  I will try to get it off of the palet in the next few days and run iot again to check the balance, I think it will be OK because when I shut the rack and engaged the compression relief the engine would spool down smoothly.  I also tried the electric start and it is definately the cat's ass! Using the electric start the engine would light off immediately with the twist of the key!  I highly recommend the electric start if anyone is looking to buy an engine, it is a small price to pay for the utility that the starter provides.   :D

It may be a few days before I get a chance to upload some pics, but I will post some.  For now I got a complete gasket set, a gib key puller and two sets of gib keys. Eventually I will stock up on some spare parts.

I'll find out too what its like to hand crank one as I'm attempting to start my 25/2 in the morning. When its on the genset, though, it will have the help of Boss Kettering's invention.

I finnaly got some time to get her off of the pallet and onto the hangar floor today to do another run and test the balance.  All I can say is that things went really well and I am VERY happy with the balance on this engine.  Balance was my biggest concearn when I purchased the engine, and after seeing it run I dont think I will have any issues running it in my attached garage.  I definately got a good one, and it is a huge load off of my back to see it run so smoothly! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Piper,
Are you using the instructions in "posting an image" thread in the general catagory, I added a new post to that thread to move it to the top of the page to make it easier to find.

Scott, I tried that the first time and must have screwed it up.  Thanks for the info though.

OK now for test #2
