Oh, my....
« on: February 22, 2009, 02:23:42 AM »
...it's a bit big, isn't it (said the actress to the bishop)! :o   Despite all of the YouTube videos, it still came as something of a surprise at just how big these things are!

Today, I collected my SoM's from Lincolnshire (180 miles from home, using a borrowed 4-cyl truck which fired on between 2 & 3 cyls for most of the journey, across what passes in England for a mountain range (the Pennines - some resasonably sized hills to most people ;D), dragging 200kgs of trailer & over 1000kgs of engine, etc.

The good news is, I have 1 complete SoM unit, c/w engine with grooved flywheels, alternator, cast base, solenoid & control boxes; and a second SoM engine with part of the solenoid assy. I have an ex-army 7kva generator which I can put with the second engine; so I've got pretty much all the bits I need for 2 complete gensets. How happy am I? 5 pints happy..... but that's another story.

Photos tomorrow... when I'm a bit more sober, and it's daylight.

Congratulations on your big one!

Sigh... I wish I had a genuine SOM.  Oh well, a couple of more pints and who cares.  ;D

Lovely old metal , bet your all thrilled up !!

I keep finding myself going out & having a look at something else... just 10 mins ago, I *had* to go check the flywheels were free to rotate... no good reason (I knew they would)...

It's like being a boy all over again ;D

I'm going to move all the small (i.e. easily movable) bits inside tonight; the rest will be fork-lifted in tomorrow morning. I can't wait to swing her over :) Q - there's no fuel tank (that I've found), and the pipe+banjo to the filter is missing; but the filter is all there. If I filled the filter bowl up, can I start her up on the contents of that?

LOL !! I'm still doing that now , 5 months after I collected mine !! Problem is that mine is in storage 25 miles away !!
As for starting on the filter bowl , I cant recall if it's higher than the fuel pump inlet , if it is it should run fine for a short time. Fill the cylinder with water and block off the lower connection though.

It is indeed above the fuel pump inlet (see last photo in my album). I'm told that the blue bag contains the water fittings, but I've not looked inside it yet... and there appears to be a small nest in the top of the water jacket  :o ::) Whether mice or birds, I don' t know. And of course there's oil levels to check, and so on.

I probably won't get a chance to fire up tomorrow (too busy); hoping to do so by Tuesday, otherwise I'm back in Spain & won't get another look at it until April  :'(

Another thing.... because it's a SoM engine, the exhaust decompressor is a solenoid, instead of the usual twist lever... so that might be interesting to try to manually hold in, while cranking up to speed... and the fuel rack doesn't have the handy lever that I've seen on other videos; again, I'm assuming the SoM solenoid would normally deal with that bit.

But hey, I'll give it my best shot! I want to hear that "putt-putt-putt" :)

Stan: He means fill the water jacket...

Apologies , that was ambiguous if not incorrect !! I meant , block off the lower connection and fill the water jacket with water !!

I'm guessing your somewhere distant up North , otherwise I'd be inviting myself over to assist in the crank up !!

Well, distant-ish. I'm just south of Liverpool, across the Mersey. About 2.30hrs drive, if the M6 isn't too gnarly.

Sweeeet! I love the patina on those old engines, if I had an original CS I don't think I'd paint it. It might not start unless there's an extension tube to the bottom of the filter housing.

When isn't the M6 gnarly ??!!  Very tempting though , there is something strangely fascinating about cranking up a long dormant engine !!
