ok that one went way over my head, guess it's a u.k. thing!

Aveling & Porter are an old steam engine company, according to Wikipedia; not sure who Burrel are...

Personally, I'd consider using LMS's colours: Wikipedia link, i.e. Maroon with yellow/gold pinstriping. And maybe black flywheels...

I found a spray bomb at the auto supply which is not far off John Deere's colour.  It would look like hell on a car, but looks good on the Lister and the generator too. Cheap, and easy to match.  For a highlight, I did the valve covers in Black as well as the generator cowlings.

Burrell was another manufacturer of steam traction engines. Here's a link to a picture of one:

Thanks you lot !! Got me tempted by an alternative colour scheme now !!! Which means an engine strip down when it didn't need one mechanically !!

"Chariot Racing" I love it . how fast do you think it will move? 5, 6 miles per hour? probably take all day to get around Daytona.

I was at a Tractor pull a few years ago and a smaller traction engine than a Burrell showed up all the Aircraft and Dragster engined pullers up by doing a full pull easily !!  Took it's time but could have done the measured distance and more !!

LOL! Now that I would have liked to see! Tractor pulling is a great TV sport; it occurred to me that it must be a bit "slow" on the day (30 second pull, wait 30 mins while they reset the trailer, rebuild the track, etc.; repeat). Maybe it's best to look at it as a good opportunity for a picnic + beer sesh, with a bit of insane motorsport thrown in as a diversion?

The Traction engines advantage of course is that it produces full torque as soon as the crank turns.
Turn around between runs is normally only about 5 mins or so. Very grass roots sport but some how addictive !!  My favourite pullers are the modified Tractors with triple compound turbo installations boosting to 200 PSI !!!  Many a crankcase becomes victim to those forces !!

5 mins is pretty quick, I'm impressed. Mind you, the trailer self-drives IIRC, which I'd forgotten earlier.

The modifieds - they're the black smokers, aren't they? For sheer spectacle, they're pretty hard to beat; and as you say, the blow-ups are pretty impressive...
