Original Lister COMING to the USA--
« on: April 05, 2006, 12:40:50 AM »
I apologize in advance for gloating just a little, but it's SO seldom I buy a pig in a poke and get an actual pig....this time he looks to be all porkchops!!!

http://www.powercubes.com/lister_pump.html

Of course the pump HAS to come with it, but the seller is playing hard to get.

There is open space in a container coming this way this fall...I'm officially starting an 'engine race'.
Is a Lister fire pump(?) worth two SOMs??
7200 hrs on 6-1/5Kw, FuKing Listeroid,
Currently running PS-Kit 6-1/5Kw...and some MPs and Chanfas and diesel snowplows and trucks and stuff.

Sorry sb-- that one has to see the West and once again work an honest day for it's keep.

I couldn't buy the  Cricket Pitch roller and this is MUCH more useful.   ;D

That SOM   WITH the cast iron base just sold for less than $200.

Hotater,

Nice buy, but I think that nice Lister would look and work better in Michigan than Idaho.  I might just have to see if i can get Lister CS west. ::)

Guys,

I think you should continue to monitor the Lister engine activities on ebay UK for the next few days.

In amongst the rock fragments and mud there is another real gem coming up.

It's not a CS,  it's his twin cousin!

Happy hunting,

Ken

cross-posted because it applies in both places---

I think there's strength in numbers and participants.  To commit to one engine coming in would be folly, in my opinion. To make it worthwhile AND spread the cost and risk around, there needs to be enough people involved to get creative in transportation and storage and material handling.  Right now I'd love to find someone with 400 square feet of dry storage and a forklift in Houston...and I will, soon.
My hunting partner here is a driver for FedX Ground and his dad does contract hauling and has a friend in Dallas that loves old engines....networking will bring this deal together and old fashioned tight fistedness will keep it cheap.
There has to be an old engine club in Houston and I'll BET one of them knows somebody that works at the Port of Houston.....be THINKING positively and let's get it done!

Chug,

Especially when we can also ship you a pair of CD engines, one a good runner and one for spares!

CD shares a few top end parts with CE.

IMHO the CE will probably only reach $750.

All right, now!

No whispering behind the barn before the auction!   Please post the link so we can all slobber over it.

Guys,

For those of you who can't type "Ebay UK" into Google,  hit the top link, and then type "Lister Twin" into the Ebay search box, I have done the first bit for you.....

WOW!  What a beast that is.....  if you use  "Stationary Engine" as a search term in ebay UK it becomes a semi-sexual thrill for a dedicated (but new) motorhead.  :o

Is the CE missing one intake and filter, or does that one stack feed both cylinders?

Can I stick one of those Mini-Petters in the crankcase of the 5-1 pumpset for shipment??

I know how the English motor-heads are viewing this 'invasion' of buying power....in the late seventies the late comedian Buddy Hackett and several other Hollyweird types started gathering together collector grade SA Colts.  In 1978 he and several friends made every small gunshow in the west and paid about four times the going rate for junk guns.   NOW those guns are worth five times what he paid....because there is a finite number of them and the population (and interest) is getting bigger.

Those in England were surprised when Americans suddenly started buying English Best Grade shotguns when the exchange rate was closer.....WE didn't have any..... and the wait for a new one is many years.... and the old ones represent the finest of the fine...at $50,000 and way up they were a bargain....and still are.
Supply and demand is at work.

An update---
Ken has collected my pump set and found a gem of a paper written up by the guys that rescued the set and restored it in 1995.
Old things are SO much more interesting when you know some history!

Lister CS 5hp Pumping Set.

This equipment was supplied to Leicester City Council in 1948 by Messrs. R.A
Lister and Co.of Dursley, Gloucestershire.

It replaced an earlier set dating to the 1930s era. The names of Land Army
Girls were written on the wooden framework of the galvanised shed where the
pump was housed, until rescued in June 1995.

The pump drew water from the River Wreak at Rotherby, near Brooksby Hall,
Melton Mobray, and pumped the supply a great distance to the Corporation
flower nurseries in Rotherby itself.

A later addition to the plumbing was a loop circuit incorporating a water
meter. It can only be assumed that this was used to find out the actual
amount of water used, in order to compare the cost of running the diesel set
against the cost of the mains water. This would probably have been in the
late 1950s. The mains supply won the financial battle, and the diesel set
was abandonned.

Fortunately full frost precautions were carried out after it's last running,
but lubrication was not carried out as well as might have been, resulting in
the wear of various parts of the pump, to which repairs are slowly being
carried out.
The pump is double acting and produces an output of 1400 gallons per hour at
a pressure of 104 PSI.

The set which weights in excess of 8 cwt is original, neither the pump, nor
the engine have been replaced.  Fortunately it has the original Lister fuel
tank with float level indicator.

Stan & Dave (pump set restorers in 1995)

How about THAT?   One note-- the discharge is in British gallons.  1400 of those is 1680 of ours.  There's also an old water meter and the piece of wood with the Land Army Girls' names on it is included.  Now I know what the guy felt like that bought and imported  London Bridge!

North to Alaska today to do battle with the Philladelphia lawyers...literally.  Back in a week.
