Or extra gaskets like the end float on a standard crank.

Have you got to much or to little end play?

I have a gap of about 4mm between the left housing and the case

If the bearings are fully onto the crank and the and the outer carriers are fully into the outer housings then it will need that gap taking up with something... But 4mm sounds way to much.
phone Steve at SEP and ask the question.

I made a bunch of gaskets (joints) of various thickness material for the main bearing housings, and by trial and error added or removed them untill I had just got rid of end play in the crank.  Some are made of plain typing paper.  I have read of others using a few thousandths of end play in the crank for TRBs but I think they should be just snug like the wheel bearing on a car.  Engines with bush bearings would need some clearance though.  Try to have about the same thickness of gaskets under each bearing housing.

I would think with that much space that it might be a good idea to start with a couple of 1.5 mm steel shims.

hi Steve
yes that's right I got the bits from there.
it's just that I have a genuine Lister 5-1 & I'm trying to fit a trb crank, but the housing seems to be not wide enough

Well i would suggest that it is not fit for purpose and ask for a replacement bush crankshaft and bush bearings.I presume that you have got the TRB bearings in the housings correct ?.

Do you have any input from SEP the supplier, do they supply shim kits?  I would of expected shim kits would be part of the supply.  A gap is not the end of the world this would not be a direct bolt up anyway some form of shim clearance adjustment will be required.  4mm is quite a gap though.  So if no help from SEP then get some shim stock and make your own.  I would not recommend gasket paper as this is not really definitive I.e it will change clearance as you tighten.  As to how much well I can tell you that other engines that I have worked on with TRB's call for 0.002" - 0.004" (does SEP have a recommendation? pays to at least ask them).  So start of with say 2 thou and then run and check temp if they start getting warm then adjust.

May I ask why you are trying to convert a genuine Lister to trb's?

Stan

Judging by previous posts it appears to be a cost based decision.
