Swap out 240 for 120. Any issues?
« on: October 16, 2008, 09:24:02 PM »
I have a chance to pick up an old Air compressor that has a blown electric motor... that feeds by belt the compressor.

Compressor and tank are good, motor was a 240v unit that died when the faulty switch shorted

here is the unit

Question:

How much of a problem would it be to swap out the 240 v motor with a 120v replacement.

It will be used for light duty around the house, not running a body shop or anything... although this is where this unit is coming from

guy wants 100 to take it.... any ideas?

I don't see any problem using a 120 v motor as long as you get the same hp motor, but if you can you would be better off with 240
A lot of those type motors are wound for 120 and 240.

ummmm maybe i could use the extra sprocket wheel that came with the listeroid and ummmm  or just run the listeroid and power a 240v motor.  kust dont have 240 in the garage and my panel is full

Oh yeah, pull in something to get the generator power to the house at the same time.

Jens

did that last year when the generator went in

could just run a panel off the generator and do from there with a distribution panel for my tools only

would get more use our of the generator that way and know it is work... right now it sits most of the time

If your panel is full pull a couple of the single circuit breakers and replace them with doubles to open up enough room.

I have one of those 5HP  :-\ shop vacs. I was wondering how well a 6 hp Listeroid generator would run it. Apparently the Listeroid is not rated in sears HP. ;)

So you guys think this old compressor is worth $100?

That looks like a nice old 2-stage pump. If it still works it's worth $100.

What's the rated HP on the dead motor?

What's the tank size?

If that pump is any good I'd give up $100 for it no problem.

faulty switch shorted

Question: are you sure the motor is dead?  My first thoughts are that if the switch shorted it is likely that the switch is brown bread, not the motor.

yeah thats what I am thinking as well.  A new motor at Princess auto is 299, and a starter switch is 149

Ive asked for the HP rating cause it looks like a 3 or 5 HP unit
