The TRB and sleeve bearing cranks are definitely different. The main problem with the sleeve bearing cranks is that the journals are the same size as the crank, so no under size bearings are possible. It would be impossible to slide the crank through an under sized bearing. There is also the problem of offsets from the crank throw. The TRB cranks have a section that is larger in diameter for the TRB bearings to sit on. Plus, a sleeve bearing can handle much higher loads than a TRB can. The sleeve bearing also runs quieter. The original Lister CS engines were never set up with TRBs. It would be a difficult thing to convert the 5/1 Lister engine, plus it would probably ruin its resale value. Many of the Listeroid cranks are set up for the sleeve bearings and these cranks and parts are very inexpensive. I sold the replacement cranks for $75 US until I ran out of them. BTW, I have never seen or heard of a Listeroid crank failure, but I have seen the original Lister cranks fail. In all fairness, the Listeroids have only been distributed widely here for the past 6-8 years while the original Lister engine have, in many cases, accrued many thousands of hours. From my experience I wouldn't be afraid of a Listeroid crank.

the original crank for a 5-1 costs £230 + and the TRB crankis only half that.

Seems to me there would be a definate market for a Lister compatable TRB end cap. I dont see why these cant be made from a steel weldment then precision bored to accept the bearing. Now, having said that I am 100 miles from my engine and cant remember the exact configuration of the stock caps but with the excess crank end that is exposed there is more than enough room to play. Only problem is bearing placement on the crank does not allow for a clean up of the area without doing the whole crank end so then you are stuck with a loose flywheel. Someone chime in and we can get this figured out.

I would say there isn't enough material in the original Lister bearing housings to accommodate the larger O.D. of a TR or RB. Another consideration is how large would a TRB or RB have to be to handle the load of SOM flywheels ?

I was suggesting the manufacture of 2 new end caps out of steel, not reworking the Lister originals just to clear that up.

Contaucreek,

There is no need to make new bearing housings.

The TRB housings are already made by the Indians and (hopefully) should bolt straight on to an original CS.

Just clean 'em up a bit and get a TRB crank, and this thrifty mod should look good and perform well for many years.
