aka the lightening rod.  ;)  If you hit it with a hammer you can only strike once thought.

MacGyver,

After all the exposure the original rod got, you wouldn't expect less than a fully crack tested, lightened, balanced, bead blasted, x-rayed and anything elsed rod would you?

If the replacement failed, after that first rod at  least withstood being bolted together, that might be the end of any cofidence in any 'oid part!

As for the weight - does George know what the best weight for good balance should be?  Should you all be aiming for this mass?  Oh, and of course, is it just lightened at the crank end?

Regards, RAB

I supported the rod by the small end and weighed the big end. Old rod is about 2330g, new rod is 2235. About 95g lighter on the big end.

Who knows which is best for balance..? It kind of depends on which other random weight parts it's mated up with...

As a general statement the lighter the reciprocating mass the better it can be "kinda" balanced. That 40lb castiron piston and 30lb rod is hard to tame!

Now if someone would weigh a real RA lister rod and find the center of gravity we would have a starting point. Then the wheels need to be matched to a standard.

Or you can just wing it as so many others have and add subtract weight to the fly wheels

I have a brand new road down in the workshop (literally, it is below the room where I am sitting)

I can do some weights and measures in the morning, we have an accurate Post-Office quality digital scales that I can use.

Let me know what you want in the way of information tonight, I'll do it and post in the morning, I am doing some CAD stuff right now, and the UK-NZ cricket match starts at 21.30 UK time, it's the last day and they are 1-1 in the series....

While Peter's away at the cricket,(sad, sad person ::)) I've dug up the figures for my 1940 rods:

b/e 2067
l/e 1167
Total rod weight 3234g

From memory, the 2 rods were pretty close to identical. These figures would be for the lighter one, the other being ground to match.
I'll bet Peter's figures come up pretty close. Mr lister seems to have liked to keep things consistent ;)
I might actually get to run this engine again soon. It's taken well over a year to get around to finishing it.hope it's worth the wait!

Cheers,

Brian

Here are some "roid" #'s to keep things interesting. IMO most of the "Listeroid Jumper" problems were due to poorly cast flywheels not piston and rod weights. 100 grams here or there on the rod and piston are nothing compared to 1.5#'s in the wrong place on a flywheel. The PS kits have much nicer flywheels! Lots of brain mass has been lost on this subject :P

My VIDHATA

Small end of Rod 1216 grams = 2.680#
Piston assembly 4025 grams = 8.873#
Big end of Rod 2742 grams = 6.045#
-----------------------------------------------------------
Total 7983 grams = 17.599#
Bobweight @ 65% 6149 grams = 13.556#

My POWER SOLUTIONS Kit

Small end of Rod 1147 grams= 2.529#
Piston assembly 4024 grams= 8.871#
Big end of Rod 2584 grams= 5.697#
-------------------------------------------------------------
Total 7755 grams= 17.096#
Bobweight @ 65% 5945 grams= 13.106#

Quinns

Small end of Rod 1194 grams= 2.632#
Piston assembly 3840 grams= 8.465#
Big end of Rod 2819 grams= 6.214#
--------------------------------------------------------------
Total 7853 grams= 17.312# I think I added it up 5 times same answer??!!
Bobweight @ 65% 6091 grams= 13.428#

avg assembly wt. 7864 grams= 17.335#
avg bobweight@65% 6062 grams=13.363#

It appears Listers have a lighter rod on the big end...that helps.....anybody weighing Lister pistons?

Apologies all, clean forgot about this one in the rush at the end of the month and other related matters!

I'll go and give myself a good thrashing behind the coal shed....

England won the series 2-1.
