JKson quality - Any stories?
« on: March 04, 2006, 08:30:58 PM »
People,

I am trying to research JKson engines and would like to hear about the hours you got on yours, and what failures you have had. I am especially interested in the finish of machined parts and the bearing life.

To kick start the thread, I can offer this..........

6-1 engine built Dec 2005

Oil pipes feeding main bearings badly bent and distorted
Bolts placed by man with large hammer i.e bent
Casting sand - typical
Timing off
Arrived with old engine oil - ran in with this?
.5mm hop in flywheel - Excessive?
Main bearings, TRB's cheap junk - Will be replaced on first decoke.
No failures, this was a new engine.

Thank you gents,

Emerald

Disclaimer:  I do sell JK engines.
I have replaced both of my older engines with JK's and both appear to be fine.  I have a 6/1 and a 20/2, haven't found any casting sand, the oil dregs in the sump were clean but a bit thick, the cross hatching on the cylinders acceptable.  There was some rust and overpaint but nothing that would cause any serious problems.

Here's my opinion after owning a JKSON, a GM-90, and 2 ashwameghs. My experience with JKSON was not good. The flywheel balance was terrible. Both the gm-90 and the ashwamegh are WAY more smooth than that particular jkson was. The ashwamegh will just sit on the ground up to 1000 rpm, the gm-90 up to 800 rpm (30 inch flywheels), and the jkson would hop all over the place at 500 rpm.
Currently no listeroids, sad........ very sad.....
Just some other antique engines ranging from 40 pounds to 33,000 pounds each.

I have 2 JKsons 12/2 & 14/1 both were clean inside and run great. @ 400 hrs tore them down and found no problems. Have had great service.

I'm wondering what serial number JK's alledgedy have poor workmanship? The bad report seems to buck the current trend? Could be older or early import units? Sure doesn't sound like the unit I've recently seen. I wish my Ashwamegh was as nice. (I just got my first hour of running done since overhaul @ 7.5 hours!)
