Re: Mysterious alternator wires
Gentlemen,
I ran the engine and took some voltage readings.
In case it's an alternator (and not a DC magnet dynamo), I used the AC setting on my mutimeter.
I am not well educated on electrical generator circuitry so perhaps someone could shed some light on this.
Engine running at 400 rpm...
3 Wires (2 red, 1 black):
Red-1 wire to common Black wire = 19.2 volts
Red-2 wire to common Black wire = 19.2 volts
Engine running at 1800 rpm...
Red-1 wire to common Black wire = 27 volts
Red-2 wire to common Black wire = 27 volts
How do I make use of this power?
I assume a rectifier and voltage regulator are necessary, but I don't have a clue what components to get.
The three wires I metered are shown coiled to the left of the starter motor. They connect to the rad fan alternator.
Below the starter, at the back of the engine, there is a module which may be a rectifier ? It has 2 green wires and one red wire.
The red one goes to the RUN side of the ignition switch, and the green wires are not connected to anything.
Changfa makes great engines, but their manual makes no reference to electrical of any kind.
Thanks to anyone who can offer some guidance on this.
PS: Finally figured out how to embed a picture. Neat!!
Cheers,
