Pictures of my trailer
« on: February 09, 2008, 11:28:47 PM »
Finally got around to taking a few pictures of my trailer-mounted Listeroid generator.
Feel free to comment and/or suggest improvements.  This rig got us through the "great ice storm of 2007" here in Oklahoma and just worked beautifully for a week of 24/7 operation.  The basic setup seems to be working great although I have thought of several areas that I intend to improve upon in the future.  I'll be doing away with the Indian fuel tank shortly and will be replacing it with a much larger tank mounted on the trailer and feeding the engine with an electric pump.

Cheers!

Outstanding job!  The control box was nicely done.  What does that fancy digital display on the right side do?
The only thing that doesn`t look quite right to me is putting all that much power through a single small serpentine type multi-V belt.

Oh, the other thing wrong is it looks way too purdy and clean to put outdoors and we all know you shouldn`t run an engine inside your house.   ;D

Wow, that shows an incredible level of attention to detail.  That ST gen head looks huge, even when side by side with the twin!

Good work!

Also - Re EPA stationary rules.  Once those outriggers are down it's pretty stationary I'd guess.  ;D

Thank you all for the kind and encouraging comments!  I've worked hard to try to build something useful, functional, and reliable. (love "Lister Porn" - I think I'll go to the truck stop and get some nekid lady mudflaps now!)
To answer some of the questions:
The head is 30kw - because I got a good buy on it.  The pulleys are actually made for a larger belt in case I needed it, but so far, the 6-rib serpentine hasn't shown any signs of distress, slipping, or heating.  Pulleys were surprisingly easy to make on the lathe.
Yes, there is quite a bit of intake noise and I intend to fabricate a remote-mounted airbox as soon as time permits.
The digital display is a Conzerv EM6459.  It shows per-leg voltage, amps, frequency, power factor, percent load, etc.  Note the two current-transformers in the electrical box.  Very nice unit for under $300.
It is a piston type oil pump and there is very little actual pressure in the system.  You can see pulses on the gauge, but no continuous pressure reading.  It's enough to tell me that oil is moving, but not much more.
The dual port thermostat housing is something we made at my shop.  It uses a Cummins t-stat which has two plungers.  The plungers mate with two faces milled into the housing.  When the stat is closed, coolant circulates in one direction back through the engine block and as it opens, it closes off that port and opens the second port which allows coolant to circulate through the other port and to the radiator. (hope that makes sense)
As to whether it's stationary or not....I figure nothing is stationary if you have a big enough crane :-)

cheers,
Chris

I was wondering what load you put that belt under.  if you use little more power than as if you had a 6/1, no problem. At a full 12, or perhaps more, kilowatts with the engine smoking at maximum power for an extended period, it might give your narrow belt more than it's fair share of punishment.  Just a thought.

RAB,
During the ice storm, I ran this rig for 7 straight days.  Average load was probably under 5KW with occasional startup surges for furnace, refrigerator, microwave, etc.  I'm running the engine at 720RPM, so probably can't make much more than around 10kw anyway.  Although the 6-rib belt didn't seem to have any problems, I'll certainly replace it with a heavier belt in the future.  The pulley on the genhead is already cut for 10 rib, so it's ready to go.  I've only been able to load test to 8kw - need to build a larger load bank I guess.  The engine didn't seem to be working hard at all at 8kw, so I plugged in my air compressor and it started that easily.
Anyone notice the safety wire between the compression changeover valves?  :D

Bob: Gotta set of halibrand's that you'll part with cheap?  That would look *WAY* cool!

Nice setup you got there. One comment I might add is to beef up the mounting hardware/bracket for that alternator, I have a small 6.5HP gasser with an alternator attached, which generates our power, the bracket looked pretty strong, but it keeps breaking on me, like last night, so now I gotta go and weld it back up...
