Pulleys, Belts, Sheaves, Bushings "Allmand Drive System" et al.
« on: February 28, 2006, 09:40:21 PM »
Hello All,
As you may have read in my other topic, my 20kW head is here, and my Listeroid 24/2 is a few short weeks away.  So that's all fine and dandy.  I think I might make my first base out of wood, but I think that's immaterial to the rest of the discussion.

I'm looking for feedback as to the usability of different drive systems, and if anyone knows any source other than Utterpower's "Allmand Drive" that I should consider for a pulley for my generator.  I think Utterpower spec'd about a 11.1" diameter unit for the 1000RPM motors.

The generator shaft is 48mm across, and there is a keyway that I couldn't bother to measure.

What do you have?
What did it cost?
Where did you get it?
What would you do differently?

Any ideas, suggestions and comments would be greatly appreciated.

serpentine belts are good, but making the pulleys costs money.

traditional vee belts aren't quite as good, but pulleys are cheap as dirt.

roller chain in an oil bath works too.

Trigzy, You might take a look for pulleys over at rockymountainpowersource.com  He has a few pulleys and things on his site. Don't know much about him though...    Loren

I had considered a chain before, but after reading about how well, my mind is stuck on serpentine belts, so lets just stick with that if we can...

It also means that I only need one pulley (for the generator) as I can run the belt directly on the flywheel.

I made my own spoked pulley cut for a six rib belt.  (Hard to do)

If I did it over I'd either buy an Allman or run a rubber contact wheel instead of the serp belt, just to be different.  ;)

I also cast a pully/bushing and use a serpentine belt.  Tricky.  Love the belt drive.  You know the chain will be much noisier...

Finest regards,

Making your own pulleys eh?? Show-offs.......  Unfortunatley I dont have access to the equipment to do that with - nor the paitence likely.

If anyone wants to make a pulley for me - I'll glady put it through extensive testing and let you know how it works.  ;D

Greetings all,
I picked up my pully from Listeroids/USA. Mike sells them for $5 less than Rocky Mountain, the pully is not cut away so is heavier(better flywheel effect), shipped to me in two days, and only $10 and change for shipping. The Postie couldn't wait to get that thing out of his mail bag.
