Changfa 195 lubricating oil type?
« on: January 13, 2008, 01:11:40 AM »
My new Changfa 195 has a manual-recommended oil type of "HC-11 in summer, or HC-8 in winter".  I can't find the SAE equivalents - can someone validate that this is close to 10W-40 and 10W-30 for me?  Or if not, what should I be using?

And how much? The manual is again missing this data (amazingly.)  I know that I could look on the dipstick as I slowly fill the engine, but... this is silly.  Germans designed this?  Not the manuals, that's for sure - those are purely authoritarian Chinese.

I use 15w 40 in my 195 without any problems...capacity around 7/8 of a gallon.

I have 350 hrs on my 195 using 15-40 also. I don't think I would go with a lighter weight.

I use SAE 30 in my JD175. I use SAE30 in my Petter.  I now use SAE30 in my 1980, 1.5L VW diesel engine in my DIY genset.  I stopped using 15W40 in the VW when I learned that the straight weight oil has superior lubricating properties that remain stable over longer time than multigrade oils.

The multigrade may be easier on the engine when starting in cold conditions but once the engine is at operating temp the straight weight is going to give you better lubrication.

The thing you have to know is that in a multi-weight oil the stock it begins with is a straight weight oil rated at the thin number.  i.e. 15W40 is basically SAE15W oil, then additives make it mimic 40 weight oil.  As the special additives age and break down, the oil looks more and more like the base stock with impurities.

In my Changfa 195, I'm running Shell Rotella-T 15W-40 formulated for diesel engines.
I run the same stuff in my Ford Powerstroke Diesel.
It's a good "all-round" diesel oil.

I use the same oil in all my small engines.

I've never had any troubles outside of too thick for cold winter starts
