SVO, anyone try growing your own?
« on: December 01, 2005, 04:24:44 AM »
I live in a rural area.  Lots of farmers, lots of cattle.

Love to get a press and press my own oil, and sell the meal to the dariy farmers.  Anyone look into doing this.

Damn I seem to be asking lots of questions

*I* don't but I know some folks in Colorado that just bought a seed press and will be feeding it Canola next year.   I wonder if I could harvest Cheatgrass..... ???   ;)

No problem with the questions, that's what this place is for.  If it were otherwise, it'd be pretty boring.

There's a lot of good information at http://journeytoforever.org/biofuel_library.html  specifically about oil seed.  This is actually a very diverse site with a lot of good stuff if you take the time to navigate around.  There's even plans for a DIY hydraulic seed press.  Seems you could do something like that with an old hydraulic log splitter . . .

You can also see my 2 ton press driven by a Changfa 195, mounted on timbers at my site  http://www.flinthillsdiesel.com.  The Chinese Mammoth brand presses are simple, durable, heavy and sorta butt ugly.   Pressing your own oil from canola or sunflowers is exceptionally cool. The first time I saw that oil coming out I danced around and yelled for a while.

I believe George at utterpower.com has a press that is up for sale.
