Frozen Landcruiser
« on: January 04, 2008, 01:52:10 AM »
Man it was cold this morning.
The Jetta started but never reached anywhere near opperating temp, or for that matter even defrosted the wind shield so I had a hell of a time getting to work.

The toyota was sitting outside the elelctric shop with a B/O block heater, 15-40 in the crank case and little desire to even roll over. No one else was interested in trying so I thought I would try some of the tricks sugested here and see if I could start the old girl.

8:15.....
Warmed the intake manifold with my heat shrink torch untill warm to the torch ( this is bigger than a hand held propane torch but smaller than a tiger torch. designed to make a lot of heat but not intense heat FYI )....
Gently warmed the injector lines and injectors, very carefuly warmed the fuel filter and and IP just enough to say warm to the touch....
Pulled off the air cleaner hose and had an aprentice hold the low flame so when I cranked it would be drawn into the intake.
Preheat with glow plugs.
8:30 with a little help from a booster pack it started to fire within a second of rolling over and was running in another 10 seconds.

I even impressed the mechanics who weren't very interested in freezing their willies off trying to boost it. Heh heh I walked in with the booster pack and the Boss asked me why I gave up so soon( and joked it would be sitting there untill spring ). Its running lol....

I'm impressed with and like to thank all the guys who have shared their tips and tricks to start frozen diesels.

Turns out the temperture reading I had was off but it was bloody cold.....

But piss doesn't freeze before it hits the ground even at -63F.  I know, I tried it.  :o

Rule of thumb:  If you spit and it freezes before it touches the ground, it is colder than -75F...

The computers lied to me.
Wasn't that cold I find out now maybe -35 or bit colder....
Still burst some pipes and turned the stares in one of the building into a cool looking ice slide.
Calibration went haywire on the temp sensor.

Still plenty cold, reminded me of living up north in Timmins.
