900 rpm 8 pole genhead
rocket:
i think the sweet spot would be a twin cylinder lister running 900 rpm directly coupled to an 8 pole generator head. i have searched but not found such a beast. i think 10kw-15kw size would be ideal. any thoughts?

I agree.
Unfortunatly, most are built for large medium speed diesels, around 1000 HP and up.
I was wondering if I could make one, like those windpower guys at otherpower-dot-com.
Wind my own coils, use Neodium magnets, etc. to increase the efficiency- both in the electric end and less loss in the drive.

As you might guess, you can make a generator head yourself ALA wind power guys. The problem comes with achieving a good sine wave. At this point, it may be easier to drive a low speed direct drive PMG and charge batteries for an inverter system.

I have been building wind turbines for the last 15 years, all have PMG alternators and all are 3 phase (for best efficiency). Typically the RPM they operate at is much lower than a CS. But is no big deal to modify the base design for a CS, the additional benefits of direct drive and eliminating transmissions losses are worth it.
Most people use wind turbines for charging battery banks, the sine wave is less then, but you can still achive a decent sine wave with good engineer discipline. After all, this is a science and most here are good with their hands/brain.
With PPM you get the most from your engine, there is no loss due to field coils or excitation, whatever you wish to call it. In wind applications every watt is precious. With an old CS running off grid, I would keep the same things in mind and spend the time to get every watt you can. If it is done once, and done right, you never again have to touch it. no communtator to wear and far less noise too.
Food for thought perhaps, and hope this is of use to some of you.

Thanks;
I agree. You windpower guys have spent alot of time and effort to find out the correct number of turns and gauge of wire etc.
The investment in time and materials is considerable. Each item gets built, operated, evaluated, and adjusted or modified. It's a never ending process as long as one stays interested. We could do it too. Right now I am spending my time rebuilding my engine and mount frame.
My hands are all beat up from appeasing the angry gods of diesel. My wife says she is going to name it Rose, because I tell her roses are co-dependant abusers that take all your love and attention, then turn around and hurt you with thorns at the first chance. :'(
