Runout is .015 in the center

You can bend it that much over your knee!

The dead-blow gives a less 'bouncy' hit.  You don't need anything but a 2x4.   ;)

10 good whacks. .003. I think I'm done. I still might mill a groove partway round the outside of the bushing.

Can't screw oil into the offside bushing. Thrust surfaces both sides.

Thanks again

AH HA!!   THanks Peter--

als--  Put the engine together and RUN it.   THat's just a carrier-locator that keeps the cam shaft from bowing TOO much.

Not quite, the fit of the shaft in the bush is quite close, so I'd guess that it is supposed to be a 'proper' bearing.

Mine is a 1944 engine and has little wear/slop in it, although it is a Lister, not a clone.

I'll take a picture tonight and put it on our website.

I'll also look at the Changed Number listing and see if any modifications were made to the bearing.

Peter--

You could be right, but usually when a bushing is cast iron it's there because it has slop designed into it.   Iron takes impact better than most bronzes.   Manganese bronze is the replacement for cast iron bushes.

Cast iron doesn't need an oil wedge to work, is another way of stating it.

OK, picture is at:

http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/Misc/CentreBrg.jpg

The fit on the shaft is close to excellent, even with no lubrication it is very good indeed.

It is also very long in relation to the shaft diameter, just liuke the main bearings.

The picture shows the oil holes and locating bolt hole as well.

als--

You *could* grind the 'funnels' but it's a lot easier to drill them with about a #4 center drill.  They can be had for a couple dollars.
