glitch in a forum (Brand Roundup)
« on: July 17, 2007, 06:03:56 PM »
in the "The Brand Roundup" thread, I've come across a glitch on page 6
 http://listerengine.com/smf/index.php?topic=141.75
pages 5 and 7 load just fine, but page 6 seems to hang the browser (both IE & Firefox), and it seems to be where the latest comprehensive list of engines is.   Have there been no updates since then ?

Hi Mike,
I was doing the list of engines for the Brand Roundup thread - things have changed a considerable amount since the last update.  Primarily for those of us living in the US, the EPA requirements now make it much more difficult to import engines legally, due to the requirements to meet tier1,2,3 . . . pollution control requirements.  The number of importers (to the US) has dropped considerably.  The manufacturers (assemblers?) are likely similar if not the same.  Ordering a single engine from India seems to be a crapshoot, with the customs/shipping problems, though people still do it, it seems.

All this is a long-winded way of saying I haven't been checking websites and updating the list.  I still have the one that should be on page 6 and can post it here if you would like, but how relevant it is, I cannot say.  Say the word and I'll post it.

Maybe repost it on it's thread, with your modern disclaimer.  I've located a site that claims to have stock, and does some mods to enhance the reliability, if such a thing can be done. http://www.oldstylelisters.com  Any info if they are worth the extra fees?  They may be the only source left.

It looks like Joel still has a few of the kit engines, but if you're not familiar with engines, and/or aren't willing to get your hands dirty, I wouldn't recommend it, as it's not a turn-key solution.  Running a few hours each week, a propane/NG Onan will last a long time, and cost about the same, however the 'roid is 10 for 10 "cool" while the Onan is, well . . .

Here's a link to show you what to expect.  http://www.utterpower.com/kit_engines.htm

Mike,
Posted again under Brand Roundup.  There are at least 3 vendors still selling Listeroids in the US.  Mike Monteith (listeroidsusa1) has done testing of the GM-90 and has had them certified for US sales (he's also selling mini-listeroids).  Sam Crosby in Maine sells on ebay, (either Metro or Metex, I don't recall which, search for slow speed diesel engines).  There is also a company from Texas, of which I know nothing.  I'm sure there are others, but I'm not currently searching.

PS - Just looked at http://www.oldstylelisters.com, as Mike suggested.  Very interesting site, worth the extra $??, I couldn't say, how fat is your bank account?   :o

I am personally impressed that anyone could offer 5,000, 25,000, 50,000 or 100,000 hour engines.  A 100,000 hour engine would run 24/7 for 11.4 years (theoretically at least).  How does a guarantee for such an engine work?  If it only lasts 50,000 hours do you get half your money back?  Non-the-less, pretty impressive.   ;)

Most Listeroid owners (I include myself here) are basically cheapskates.  A cool, antique-design engine for ~$1000+ or so?  Count me in!  As the costs creep toward ~$2000+ for a basic engine, other alternatives start looking more attractive.  Wherever you buy it, check shipping - it's expensive to ship 800-1000#'s of cast iron any distance.  The cool factor can't be ignored, but, it all depends.   ;D
