RPM's and governer
« on: January 24, 2006, 02:40:50 AM »
I wondered if a 1000 rpm Listeroid can be governed to say 700 rpm's with out any problems?

That's a thirty percent reduction in speed.  If the flywheels are smaller due to the higher rpm design, then they won't have the same effect on the engine under load.....wonder what else?

I know if I slow my Listeroid to 400 rpm the governor response is much slower and acceleration under load is way different.

My 1000 rpm Mini-Petter vibrates badly at about 600 rpm but smooths out at the higher speed.  Hmmmm.  ???

 Your mileage may vary.

Mine has been governed to around 750rpm for the last 1200hrs and I have had little problems considering the garbage goop I run it on. It took a bit of playing around to find the right spring... I am still not 100% satisfied, but it is more than functional and providing 15hrs of power per day at the moment.... I have found some different springs and I am going to install them quite soon to test it out and see if I can make it better still...

I agree with EdDee,
My Ashwamegh 25/2 is a 1000 RPM rated engine, not that it actually coulddo that without braking some mount bolts.
I derated it to about 735 RPM because that's where it ended up after I bought a larger alternator pulley from George B.
The governor was never any good until I followed his or this site on governor up-grades and springs. now it's fine.

I run my 25/2 the same. 1000 derated to about 725 or so.
No problems but I did spend time adjusting timing and linkages.

I thought this 9 year old thread amusing.
Remember Darren ??

Electronic governors with solenoid control don't care what speed the engine is running. This is the route I plan to take some day when I get around to rebuilding my witte diesels.
Currently no listeroids, sad........ very sad.....
Just some other antique engines ranging from 40 pounds to 33,000 pounds each.

My GM90 Listeroid is rated 8HP @ 900 rpm.
I run it at 450 rpm with no issues, so yes you should be able to run anywhere between 650 and 1000 with no issues.
(Perhaps a lighter spring on the governor may be in order)

cheers,

Hi guys,

Tested some springs, modded the governor slightly, set the links a bit and got stable running at around 550rpm... If you tweak the links a bit, you can get it quite stable at low revs...
