lister LD 19 with bolt on ac dc generator
« on: April 02, 2007, 04:10:14 AM »
Gidday
Newbie just checking in

we've just inherited a LD series lister "start o matic"

i'm thinking circa 57

[has #857 on it?]

genset has been unbolted for a good 10 yrs but both motor and gen have been well stored

guess i'm wonderin if anyone has any thing similar so i could compare notes etc

was wondering if anyone had info on the wiring

its got 2 sets of wires

ac 50 cycles and dc

both sets of wires disappear into the generator housing

just wondering whether to leave well alone or to have a good look inside

eventually hope to set up on some form of Bio, SVO or WVO -- still early days

any thoughts welcome -- any hints or resources docs especially for the genset side of things

types of loads , safety for appliences etc, wiring satey

cheers in advance

We have a few of the old Lister genhead documents and may be able to match something up for your wiring. We also have good resources for the LD engine available. Contact me at gsj@gci.net and we can find your specifics.

Yup! just bought an exact same generator, got it home yesterday. its a startomatic set which is complete in every way.

Here is the info from the plates on both engine and generator.

                                                     1st plate.
                                                 No- 6623 Ld18
                                                     HD-3
                                                 RPM-1500

                                                     2nd plate
                                                  No-1717a/507
                                                    KVA-1.5
                                                     volts- 230
                                                     phase-1
                                                     cycles-50
                                                         pf-1
                                                     speed- 1500

                                                  3rd plate
                                                shunt regulator
                                                 OHMS-0.6
                                                  AMPS-12

Im in the UK, so that is why its 50 HZ and 1500 rpm....US would be 60HZ and 1800.
This one is Going on WVO as soon as I get it installed. Its replacing my Petter PAZ1 (Which has run now for many thousand hours)

There is a circuit diagram in the "Start-o-Matic" box. Let me know if I can help out in any way.
Cheers Dave

Hi All
I have just bought a Lister LD 18 3hp Startomatic.
It looks complete apart from I cannot find a starter motor?? Any Ideas.

Does anyone have any documents or know of any postings regarding my new friend.

Kind Regards

Stephen

Hi Stephen.

I believe the starter in the Startomatic series was the DC part of the genhead.
The gen is used as a starter/generator. It is common for many DC generators to be wired pretty much the same as a DC motor.

e.g. if you apply voltage to the right places on an old car 12v generator (the ones used before alternators became common in the late 60's) it will start turning.
They actually have a fair bit of torque for their size.

My father in-law tells me when he was young the neighbourhood kids used to use them as motors for their go-carts.

A 12v battery, an old car gen, a belt and 2 pulleys got kids into a lot of fun and trouble!!

Hi Matt,
Thanks for the post.  You are right I have had a good look at the wiring diagrame and it does show power on the alternator. I also had it confirmed by Ken Boak.  He also tells me its 24V starting so it looks like I will need another battery.  I may even treat it to a new 24V one.  I think it deserves it after all these years.

If anyone knows anything about them please let me know.  Again Ken has kindly sent me loads of info of how they work.

Kind Regards

Stephen
