st voltage regulator popped
« on: March 10, 2007, 05:10:34 PM »
I blew my voltage regulater on my 12kw tawasi gen. head. I overloaded it when I overrevved the engine. The small round capicator or whatever it is popped and smoked out. I need to get a new vr to replace it. Can someone tell me where to locate one? Please. something as simple as possible since my electrical wiring skills are limited.

200 Micro Farrad cap, 200 vdc electrolitic type.Anything matching that with an equal or higher voltage rating will solve that problem. Try a local electronics suplier they may have one sitting on the shelf ( so might I actualy )

The AVR unit is a different matter, if its toasted its probaly not servicable.

Doug

I need to go back and rethink the AVR project, need something simple that still produces good results ( %5 )

Bummer... "Potted" assemblies usually don't dissipate heat very well.  Sure are vibration resistant though ;D.  It is extremely difficult to remove that compound without destroying the circuit buried within.

Maybe this guy knows what the ST needs, he does sell them....

Perhaps the reason he is selling these regulators is they are an upgrade to resolve the problem, or they might just be spares....

Can't hurt to ask him

Since we are on the topic of voltage regulators.  I need one for a Kato.  Is there such a thing as a universal? I'd sure like to keep the cost down on this thing if I can.  Thanks.

I'd also like ot add, when I asked the guy I got it from about a voltage regulator he handed me two 225 volt 500 ohm lug resistors.  I have no idea what to do with these.  He was pretty grumpy so I didn't bother to ask him.

The vendor at the following link is advertising ST heads with voltage regulators. Maybe he can supply you with a regulator:

Please note that I have not done business with this individual nor have I used this particular product. So I can't speak for either.

I've been looking threw some old Onan prints, Leroy Somers and think there may be some simpler ways to build a crude regulator that can provide a little suplimental power to the rotor in series withthe basic Z winding.

I need to do sopme more thinking.

Alternately we come back to the clean sheet New AVR again and look for things to encorperate from the ONAN regulators and Leroy Somres CT voltage booster.

I know Andy and a few others will frown but I'm thinking about a crude open loop control.

Doug:

You've got me wrong on this point. I'm all in favor of whatever setup will do the job and will not frown on anything that works. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I'm eager to get my own gen-set up and running so that I can start working on this problem too.
