Sand blasting is ok but should not be used on parts that go inside the engine. The inside parts should be glass bead blasted. Reason: using sand on iside parts will leave very small particles inbeded in the metal and later it will get in your oil.     Loren

Internal engine parts and surfaces should not be glass-beaded for the same reason.  The glass beads shatter and embed themselves in the surface of the metal, particularly soft metals such as aluminum.  In the heating and cooling cycles of the engine these particles are then released into the lubricant etc.

Soda, plastic beads, walnut shells or corn husk are the only materials I would use to blast internal engine or machine parts.

A thorough degreasing in an ultrasonic cleaner, followed by a few days soak in vinegar (acetic acid 5-7%) followed by pressure washing or another ultrasonic bath, will leave a ferrous metal surface "white" with the pits cleaned out to the very bottom

*Never let a turbo rebuilder glass bead your turbo housing or parts.  They do it all the time, but then they don't want your turbo to last forever... ;D
