Thermostats for Lister 6/1 12/2 etc

Hi Add a small hole in the t-stat to allow water to pass through. This will get hot water near the "Pill". This will give you a more even regulation. I tried thermostats without the added hole and the engine would get hotter than the temp rating for the t-stat before it opened, then cool off some before stabilising. You could also cut the gasket center opening to fit the t-stat. then one gasket would do. the gasket then would hold the t-stat in place.

I had the same thought although it's purpose was to allow air to escape during initial fill because the radiator model fills from the bottom up.  I had thought a 1/8" hole should be big enough, do you think?

I feel that 1/16" on a convection cooled engine may well be a little small, as a piece of scale could easily block it up.

1/8" would be better in my view, but like all things it is a matter of preference rather than engineering necessity.

How about 3/32" ? :-))

Hi All,

You might try a "Failsafe" thermostat. It fails open, to keep cooling the engine.  MotorRad is one of them.

I am trying to find as small of diam. with the highest temp. rating I can find.  I will be using 100% poly glycol which boils at 360 degrees F. & freezes at -60 degrees F.   I should pick up more efficientcy.

I know I posted this before but here's what I came up with for a thermostat for the Petter.

It's an inline type made to screw to an outlet flange with a JCI # 16 fitting on bottom and an improvised what ever that fits into a 1/14 inch union. The Thermostat is from a a small Kubbota loader.

Jeff-  I was also going to go straight polypropylene glycol (PPG).  I got some Sierra brand at NAPA, but one thing I noticed was that in cold weather, it's viscosity was so great that I didn't think I could get the air out of the system, and was also concerned about flow through the outside radiator when it was say 10 degrees.  So I took chickened out an went with a regular 50/50 mix. 

Please let me know if you find an affordable source of a different type of PPG that is not so viscous at low temps, or if you find that this is not a problem.  I like the high temp end on PPG- my system is only a few pounds of pressure from gravity, and at 5600 feet I'd like more head room before boiling.
