Lister CD Idler Gear Shaft Position
« on: January 27, 2007, 09:09:03 AM »
Just a thought on the Idler Gear shaft:

It has an oil groove cut into the bearing surface that should be positioned uppermost when the shaft is bolted into the crankcase.

As you cannot see it (the gear is on the shaft by then) Lister cut a groove across the face of the threaded end of the shaft with a machined flat to show which way the top is.

If you don't fit the shaft the right way up, it will still get oil into the gear/shaft region, but it won't carry inside the joint as well as it should.

That should be Lister CS Idler Gear Position!

Saw the error but can't find a way to go back and correct the post afterwards.

I agree....on the offset shafts I have made I put the groove in after I found where I wanted it. I will put them in the new ones now because the offset ones will locate the offset towards the cam gear close enough. If you install it wrong you will know!

Peter you can edit your own original post I think!....

Dave

oops! I'm in the wrong thread! sorry you guys don't have the off location issue!

xyzer,
Do I understand you are making some more offset shafts?  Can I pay for one now?  Thanks,

Zeke,
Yes I am! No on the payment I want to wait and see what the costs will be, but I will put you on the list. Zeke is you motor disambled now? If so some measurements would be helpful in deciding what offset we can all get by with. Do you have dial calipers? Lest me know and I'll tell you what to measure. Peter supplied us with some good measurements off an original and I want to find out how for on the average ours are off.

Peter sorry about messing up your thread on the idler lube grove location!

Dave,
Yes, engine is completely dis-assembled.   Have a OK dial caliper.  Happy to help in any way.  Timing gear train was my last remaining insoluble problem.  Can you tell I'm happy now? :) :) :)
Peter, also sorry we took off on a tangent.

Dave,
We could take our discussion to my 20-2 thread and let Peter get back on subject.
